In an official declaration issued last Friday, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) reported a significant upswing in crop production compared to the preceding year.

For the year 2023, quantities of cereals and various crops (excluding fodder crops) exhibited a 10.3% increase, vegetables saw a marginal uptick of 0.6%, and fruits, beverage, and spices crops witnessed a rise of 2.3% compared to the previous year.

Production quantities for 2023 were approximately 77.7m tonnes for cereals and other crops, 31.8m tonnes for vegetables, and 27.4m tonnes for fruits, beverage, and spices crops.

Cereals production in 2023 experienced a growth rate of 9.1% compared to the previous year, reaching an approximate total of 42.2m tonnes.

Wheat production escalated by 11% to reach 22m tonnes, barley production increased by 8%, totalling 9.2m tonnes, rye production saw an 11% rise, amounting to 305,000 tonnes, and oats production surged by 12%, reaching 410,000 tonnes compared to the preceding year.

Potato production, among tuber crops, increased by 9.6%, totalling 5.7 million tonnes.

In the oil seeds category, soybean production decreased by 11%, totalling 137,500 tonnes, while sunflower production amounted to approximately 2.2m tonnes, reflecting a 14% decrease.

Sugar beets production witnessed a substantial increase of 22.1%, reaching 24m tonnes.

In 2023, vegetables production saw a modest increase of 0.6% compared to the previous year, a total of approximately 32m tonnes.
