Administering targeted and appropriate foliar nutrition to crops early in the season will significantly impact this season’s gross margins according to OMEX’s national agronomy manager Scott Baker. Mr Baker states that this is especially true when considering the formidable establishment conditions faced by growers across the UK.

Since early autumn, relentless rainfall has made its mark on both planted and yet-to-be-planted crops, undeniable in its effect.

“With Spring just around the corner, the importance of getting crops off to the best start is clear,” he says. “Rooting is a vital stage in crop development with strong roots creating the basis for healthy plants that are able to withstand the stresses of the growth cycle.

“However, during a season where many crops were not drilled in the autumn, it’s critical those planted in spring flourish and deliver a high return on investment. However, wet soils with poor structure can create stressed crops and these will need to be given nutrition to help them deal with challenging growing conditions.

“To achieve strong healthy roots, growers need to apply phosphite formulated with nitrogen and potassium in the form of Kickstart, which in fully independent trials has been shown to promote early root growth and improve establishment,” explains Mr. Baker. “It also aids the uptake and systemic movement of co-applied nutrient cations within the plant, creating an overall healthier crop.”

Trials conducted at Nottingham University showed an average increase in root mass of 38% when applied to three true leaves compared to the untreated plants. Randomised replicated plot trials at the end of the growing season showed a 0.5t/ha yield response, proving the value of boosting early establishment in cereals.
