The strong demand for Luing cattle continued at the society’s sale at Castle Douglas last week – where averages were up and more were sold on the year, with the females enjoying a 100% clearance.
While buyers were selective in their bull purchases, those which did meet the grade sold well, topping at 13,000gns, with 18 out of the 24 forward finding homes. Reaching the top spot was the second last bull in the ring, Benhar Kansas, from the McNee family’s herd at Woodend, Armadale. A son of the record breaking 14,000gns Dirnanean Geldof, out of a home-bred dam by Luing Soldier, he sold to Ted Fox, Elsdonburn, Kirknewton, Wooler. Mr Fox recouped some of that money by selling his bull, College Kracker, by the 10,000gns Benhar General, to the McNees.
Averages: 112 bulling heifers, £1631.25 (+£312.25 for three more sold); 36 in-calf heifers, £2018.33 (+£567.33 for 14 more sold); 18 bulls, £4270.00 (+£301.00 for three more sold).
