The sole Salers seller topped the trade at the ‘pedigree beef day’ at Carlisle – which included consignments of South Devons, Herefords and Beef Shorthorns.

Making 4600gns was Whitebog Dave, a 22-month-old from Alister MacKenzie, Whitebog, Fortrose, Ross-shire. Full of home breeding, he is by the Whitebog Rabbie Burns son, Whitebog Vinnie, and out of Whitebog Tara, a daughter of Lascar Imp. He sold to W and AM Aitken, Slotstown Bank, Blyth Bridge, Peebles.

The only South Devon bull to sell, out of a catalogued entry of four, made 4200gns for Robert Lee, Lumbylaw, Edlingham, Alnwick. This was the 26-month-old Lumbylaw Magnus 21, a son of the privately-bought Enterprise Condor – also the sire of the champion and top price at the Stafford sale. Out of the Trewint Jubilee Junior 7 daughter, Lumbylaw Mary 17, one of 110 cows in the herd, he sold to AP and PE Greenshields, The Granary, Stonegate Farm, Houghton-Le-Spring.

Beef Shorthorns met a solid trade, selling to 3700gns for the breed champion, Annanwater Blair, a two-year-old roan bull from Andy Ryder, Newton, Moffat. A son of the 6000gns Newfield Tarquin, a bull bought at Perth, he is out of Llanarth Rose, a Chapelton Nobility daughter bought at Chelford, to join Mr Ryder’s 25-cow herd. Final bidder was A Greenwood, Beaver Farm, Trawden, Colne, Lancashire.

Not far behind, on 3500gns, was Ballyart Legend, a 14-month-old son of Kilfrush Vantage, from Owen O’Neil, of Limerick, Eire. A second prize winner, he is out of Glenbally Aran, a Tierlaheen Conor daughter. Legend sold to MJA Ward, Morra Head Farm, Harwood Dale, Scarborough.

Best of the Hereford bulls was Amberfield 1 Enhancer, a two-year-old Hillrow 1 Wrestler son from Andrew Hewson, Parton Farm, Wigton, Cumbria. Out of Amberfield 1 Brunette 21, one of 15 females in the herd, he sold for 2300gns to Glasgow University’s vet school, at Concho Farm, Hardgate, Clydebank.
