Cairness tops Suffolk sale at 8000gns

The annual production sale of Jimmy Douglas' Cairness Suffolk flock, from Fraserburgh, which included consignments from Robbie Wilson's Strathisla flock; John Sinnett's Stockton flock; and Gordon Troup's Whitestone flock, again attracted a large ringside at Carlisle, last week, where a top price of 8000gns was achieved.

That price was paid for an embryo gimmer by Cairness Cyclone, the 26,000gns National Sale champion in 2010, out of a Muiresk King of Diamonds-sired dam, making her an embryo sister to Cairness Custom. She sold, having been AI'd in August to Cairness Diamond Jubilee, one of the best lambs ever bred at Cairness, for 8000gns across the water to Gary Beacom of Lake View House, Crevenish, Enniskillen, County Fermanagh.

Robbie Wilson's Strathisla flock, based near Turriff, Aberdeenshire, met a good trade, selling to a top of 4500gns. That was for a gimmer by Strathisla Sea Bird and out of Strathisla Schumacher-sired ewe which is sister to the 48,000gns Strathisla Dylan Thomas. This one was served by the 23,000gns Rookery Rooney and was knocked down to Northern Irish breeder Mark Priestley of Limestone Farm, Drumgooland Road, Seaforde, Downpatrick.

See this week's The Scottish Farmer for the full report, including averages and pictures of the other top prices, out November 24.
