A LOOK at prime sales to the week ended June 14, 2016.

Forfar 
PRIME cattle sold to a top of 248p per kg for a Limousin heifer from Gask at Lawrie and Symington last week. 
Heifers (23) also reached £1435 for a Limousin from West Bog and averaged 211p.
A British Blue from Nethermyres led the bullocks at 234p per kg and £1380, with bullocks averaging 218p for six sold. 
Spring lambs (141) sold to 245.5p for a pen of 44kg Texels from J Jackson, Southtown of Melgund, and to £112 for a pair of 50kg Suffolks from the same home to average 207.2p (-2.5p on the week). SQQ lambs averaged 223.2p. 
Cheviots hoggs weighing 45.5kg from West Pittendreich sold to 151.7p with Texels from the same home to £73, to top the 107 hogg on offer. 
Cast ewes and rams (51) peaked at £106 for a pen of Texel ewes from Chapelton of Menmuir. 


Dumfries
TRADE for prime cattle was sharper on the week at C and D Auction Marts, last week, where a Limousin heifer from J and L Craik, Waterside, topped at 213.5p per kg.
Cast cows (56) to £1013.80 for an Aberdeen-Angus from Carruthers and 150p for another Angus, this time from Dalmakethar. Of the 22 beef cows forward, they averaged 124.5p and dairy cows (34) averaged 86.3p. 
Prime lambs (515) sold to a satisfactory trade, and leading at £100 were Suffolks from Palaceknowe £100 with Texels from Bush of Craigs selling for 226p. 
Cast ewes and rams (183) were on cheaper on the week selling to a top of £104.50 for Texels from H McLeish, West Skelston. 

Thainstone 
FORWARD at Aberdeen and Northern Marts, last week, were 438 prime sheep which included a show and sale of Texel prime lambs (see page 55 for report). 
Old season lambs (228) sold to £76.50 gross from Kirkhill of Tunnerhall, Ellon. New season SQQs up to 45.5kg (106) averaged 203.4p (+9.1p) with the 169 new season lambs at 195p (+4.4p).
Prime bullocks (38) averaged 189.4p (+1p) and sold to 229p and £1511.40 for a 660kg Limousin from Mains of Drumbeck, Udny. 
Prime heifers (24) averaged 190.9p (-3.7p) and sold to 216p for a 570kg Limousin from Kirkhill, Gartly, and £1356.60 for a 665kg British Blue from Waterside of Forbes, Alford. 
The 10 young bulls forward averaged 160.4p (-1.5p) and sold to 181p for a 535kg Charolais from Waterside of Forbes, and £1336.60 for an 820kg Simmental from Mains of Drumwhindle, Ellon. 
Cast beef cows (140) averaged 135.2p and sold to 192.2p for a Limousin from Brims Mains, Forss and £1470 for a 935kg Limousin from Easterside, Stonehaven, while the seven dairy cows cashed in to average 98.9p. 

Longtown 
HEIFERS dominated the prime sale at C and D Auction Marts last week, where a pair of Limousin heifers sold to 213.5p per kg.
First at this price was from Beacon Farms Ltd, Swordwellrigg, with the second from Messrs Taylor, Dashwell Green, also making £1253. 
Leading the bullocks was Limousin from Dashwell Green at 199.5p. 
An outstanding show of 1144 lambs was also forward at Longtown and met a similar trade on the week. The sale topped at 228p for Texels from Boldron and £108 for Texels from Millhouse, with an overall average of 199.5p.
Hoggs (1118) improved on the week selling for £8- £10 more and averaging 168.4p, with Texels from Low Knockrioch, Kintyre, selling for 196p, and Texels from Linton Farm to £111. 
Cast ewes and rams (3327) saw Texel rams from Graceside top at £154, with Texel ewes from The Land topping at £136. 


Stirling (UA) 
SOLD through United Auctions last week, were 2121 prime sheep, including 919 lambs, 864 hoggs and 338 ewes and rams.
Texels from Blinkbonny lead the lamb trade at £108 and Beltex from Easter Ochtermuthill sold to 227p per kg. 
Hoggs peaked at £90 for Texels from Dechmont and 173p for Cheviots from Borenich. 
Easter Garden Texels topped the ewes at £127.50, while Texels from Goddens lead the tups at £111. 


Huntly
HANDY weight lambs were short of buyers’ requirements and were much sharper on the week at United Auctions, where most cashed in at more than 200p per kg. 
New season lambs (72) sold to 218p for 42kg Texels from Meikle Begshill, Drumblade, and £95 for 58kg Charolais from Lower Inchcorsie, Rothiemay. 
The hogg ring (270) still remained buoyant, with well fleshed types being a shade dearer. Texels weighing 36kg from Coulterfanny, Tyrie, sold to 181p, and 71kg Mules from Smithyhillock, Rosehearty, sold to £90. 
A larger show of ewes were also present with Suffolk ewes from North Quilquox to £95. 


Dingwall
PRIME bullocks selling through Dingwall and Highland Marts averaged 198.6p per kg (+2.2p) for the eight forward, and sold to 211p and £1339.85 for a 635kg Limousin cross from Findon Mains, Culbokie. 
Heifers (seven) averaged 197.8p (-1.8p) and sold to 203p for a 550kg Limousin cross from Bridgend Farm, Dingwall, and £1332.80 for a 680kg Charolais cross from Mountrich Farm, Dingwall. 
Also sold through Dingwall were 157 prime sheep, with new season lambs (77) selling 20.9p up on the week. Texel crosses weighing 44kg from Lochdhu, Nairn, sold to 211.4p and with 47.5kg Texel crosses from the same home at £99. 
Old season lambs (62) averaged 166.8p (-4.1) and sold to 182.8p for 43.5kg Texel crosses from Glebe, Kiltarlity, and £80 for 44kg Cheviots also from Glebe. 


Carlisle 
ALL classes sold well through Harrison and Hetherington on Monday, where a smaller entry of 67 prime cattle was forward. 
Messrs Chrichton, Loughrigg, topped the bullock and heifer trade when they sold a Charolais cross heifer to £1555.74, and a Charolais cross bullock to £1528.56. 
Top and overall pence per kg for heifers was achieved twice, firstly by Messrs Redhead and Son, Bowsden Moor Farm, Berwick, for a Limousin cross, and secondly by Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, again with a Limousin cross. 
Top pence per kg for bullocks was 209.5p for a Limousin cross which was attained by Messrs Anderson, Crosby House, Maryport.
An increased entry of prime lambs met a good demand where a single Suffolk lamb shown by A Dalgleish, Mid Murthat, Beattock, sold to £110.80. Topping the price per kg at 254.5p was RD and P Urwin, The Square, Kirklinton, with Beltex lambs. 
Ewes also met a good trade, selling to £117.50 for a pen of six Texel ewes, from Messrs Pigg, Gaitsgill. 


Stirling (Cal)
SELLING through Caledonian Marts, last week, were 124 prime cattle which peaked at 240p per kg for a Limousin heifer from AS Hay, Mains of Cultmalundie.
Heifers also reached £1482.96 for a Limousin from D Dickinson, Brockwoodlees, who also sold a Limmy bullock at £1530.64. 
Otherwise, a Limousin bullock from W Dandie and Sons, Learielaw, realised 230p and bullocks cashed in to average 202p with heifers at 200p. 
A strong show of 585 lambs was forward on Tuesday, where they sold to a top of 202p for a pen of 43kg Texels from WS Young and Son, Mawcarse, Milnathort, and £93 for a 48kg Beltex from J Gilvear and Sons, Graystale, Stirling. The SQQ average for 521 was 175p (-26p on the week). 
Leading the 245 hoggs were Texels from R Sibbald, Thorn, Dollar which sold for 151p and £82 from JD Mackie, Wester Boards, Kilsyth. 
Also forward this week were 226 cast ewes, averaging £57.14 (-9.17p on the week) where Texels from Gilmeadowland sold for £96. 


Ayr 
Following the show and sale of prime Suffolk lambs on Monday (see report below), Craig Wilson sold nine prime heifers on Tuesday to average 217p. per kg.
They peaked at 229p for a home-bred Limousin from J Sloan, Dormieston.
Of the 140 sold through the rough ring, 38 beef cows averaged 123.8p and sold to £1050 for a British Blue cross from J Lamb, Burton, while the 82 dairy cows levelled at 90.6p for sold to £900 for a black and white from Messrs Harper, Kaimhill.


Castle Douglas 
WALLETS Marts held its weekly sale of 648 prime lambs and cast sheep on Tuesday, where prime lambs (549) sold to average 179.48p per kg. 
The top price came from Messrs Porteous, Babershall, for Texels which sold to £87 and 212p per kg. 
A smaller show of hoggs were forward, where Texels from Barcloy sold to £68.50, and cast sheep were again cheaper selling to a top of £113 for Texel rams from Gelston Castle.

 
Newton Stewart
SELLING through Craig Wilson on Wednesday were 331 prime lambs which averaged 173.3p per kg.
They sold to 182p for Texels from Baryerrock and £82 for heavy Suffolks from Glengyre. 
Cheviots from Garrochtrie topped the hoggs at £64.
