NEWS of the US Department of Agriculture’s proposal to change the regulations which restricted sheepmeat imports from the EU has come as a welcome boost to the UK sheep industry.
George Milne, development officer for the National Sheep Association in Scotland, who was part of the delegation to discuss the proposal last year said:
“We requested that the process was pushed forward during our visit, so it is good to see this being considered. It is now up to us to assist in the movement of sales of lamb to the US in 2017.”
Phil Stocker, chief executive of the NSA added: “This sounds incredibly encouraging and just the sort of news the UK needs following our referendum decision to exit the European Union.
“It may only be a consultation at this stage, but the proposal to open the market for sheep productions including meat, breeding animals, and genetic material can only be good for both the UK and US sheep industries.”
