ABERDEENSHIRE showman, Blair Duffton came home in style from last weekend's show and sale of show potential calves at Brecon, having purchased his choice of champion at £5000.
Mr Duffton, who bought a select number of calves at the 2016 event and was this year asked to judge, saw his champion, Little Miss P, a British Blue cross heifer from Phil and Owen Watkins, Hay on Wye, Brecon, top the sale. This 10-month-old is out of a Limousin cross cow.
Mr Duffton also bought the second top priced heifer at £3350 along with another at £3100. The heifer, a seven-month-old christened My Gracie, from Brian and Matthew Jones, Bailea, Senni, Brecon, is by a black Limousin bull and bred from a pedigree Limousin.
Scottish genetics were behind the £3100 calf, a Limousin cross steer by Lodge Hamlet, from G Jones, Dolderwen, Llanafan Fawr. This nine-month-old is out of a Limousin cross British Blue.
Lodge Hamlet was the sire of a £3100 heifer from the same home too, when the 10-month-old heifer, Dolderwen Merceedes, out of Dolderwen Indulgence, was purchased by P and S Swellers, Thorpe Tilney, Lincoln.
Second top price was £4100 paid for a nine-month-old Limousin steer from DS, DA and P Brute, Gwndwnwal, Llanfihangle, Brecon, which sold to CJ Harris, Little Lamber. First in his class at the pre-sale show, he is out of a British Blue cross cow.
The reserve champion, That's My Girl, an eight-month-old heifer from JM and AM Lewis, Pentwyn, Cwrt y Cadno, made £3000 selling to Mike Rowlands, Dolwen. She is by the Limousin sire, Powerhouse Elile and out of a Limousin cross British Blue dam.
Fellow Scottish showman, James Nisbit, Sorn Mains, Ayrshire, also got in on the action, forking out £1550 for Fraser, an eight-month-old three-quarter Limousin steer from BG Brace, Rhiwlas, Trimsaran.
In all, 19 cattle sold for more than £2000 with 54 heifers averaging £1751 and 51 steers at £1556.
