Averages: Whitbred Shorthorns – Five bulls, £2772.00 (+£460.25 for one less); three females, £1872.50 (+£210.00 for the same number). Galloways – Pedigree – Three bulls, £2327.50 (+£745.00 for four less); four heifers in milk and or in calf, £1365.00 (n.c); 19 bulling heifers, £1100.29 (-£161.21 for five more); three cows, £728.00. Non-pedigree – Six bulling heifers, £880.00 (-£136.66 for three fewer).

WHITBRED Shorthorn bulls ruled supreme at a joint show and sale of Whitbread and Galloway cattle at Carlisle, securing the top two prices at 4700gns and 4400gns.

Dearest was Hottbank Lancer, a rising two-year-old son of Blackburn Marshall, from JRF Pattinson and Son, Hot Bank, Bardon Mill, Hexham, purchased by M, ME, TR and KM Wallace, Farney Shields, Ninebanks, Hexham. He is out of a home-bred cow by Hole of Lyne Tommy and stood third in his class at the pre-sale show.

On the debit side, Hot Bank bought the champion, Blackburn Jethro, a similarly aged Barlaes Welcome son from Gordon Jackson, Blackburn, Newcastleton. He is out of a home-bred cow by Lochdochart Nemo.

The reserve champion topped the Whitbred females, selling at 3000gns for JT and K Madden's Ballyvaddy herd from Glencloy, Ballymena, Co Antrim. This was Ballyvaddy Weigela, a May 2014-born heifer by Longley Talisman, which sold served to Blackburn Monty, to Isle of Arran producers MG and J Taylor, Dippenhead, Largiemeanoch.

Leading the Galloway trade at 2600gns were two bulls from Troloss Farms, Dumfriesshire and S Busby and Co, Unthank, Langholm. The former, Troloss Kansas, a two-year-old by Blackcraig Dec, was champion and sold down to Devon with GTJ and A Medland, Wilminstone Hall, Tavistock.

The latter, Unthank Arthur, a similarly aged bull by Rebus of Nether Cleugh, was knocked down to Andrew Thorpe, Winterbutt Lee, Eagley Bank, Shawforth, Lancs.

Pedigree Galloway heifers sold to 1600gns twice. First was Walter Henderson's Astrid 647 of Whitehill, a June 2014-born heifer by Mountbenger Colonel, from Whitehill, Corrie, Lockerbie, purchased by K Laurie, Snowden Close, Gilsland, Brampton. She sold served to Titan of Whitehill.

Robert McTurk's Barlaes Brownie 232, an April 2015-born heifer by Barlaes JFK, from Barlaes, Dalry, also made 1600gns selling to Welsh breeders, T Davies and Sons, Bailey Bog, Rhaeader, Powys. She was reserve female champion.

The female champion, Barlaes Brownie 231, a similarly aged heifer by the same sire, made 1550gns to Brendan Douglas, Ganvaughan Road, Castle Derg, Co Tyrone, Northern Ireland.
