Dispersals – Wester Balbeggie – 31 Holstein and Fleckvieh cross cows in milk £820.96. Dinwoodie Green – 38 British Friesian cows and heifers in milk, £862.36; six British Friesian in-calf heifers, £10611.66; 31 British Friesian bulling heifers, £842.90.

NO fewer than 39 animals sold at or above the £1600 bracket at the March Borderway Monthly Dairy Day sale at Carlisle which attracted an entry of 182 cows and heifers in milk and or in-calf and bulling heifers, to include Holsteins, Brown Swiss, British Friesian, Montbeliarde, Fleckvieh and Ayrshires.

Trade was topped at £1900 with the milking portion averaging £1564 which compares to the same sale last year when heifers averaged just over £1000 per head.

Leading the sale was a heifer in milk from M and JA Johnston, Petteril Side Farm, Carlisle, who sold four by Nethervalley Real Deal, to average just over £1700. Their £1900 entry was bought by TJ and JM Powley, Blands Farm, Great Strickland, Penrith, who also bought the second top priced lot at £1820 from the same home.

Messrs Lindsay, Seaton Hall Farm, Millom who have been dispersing their herd as they calve, sold three to a top of £1780 for a heifer by Bilsrow Oscar giving 36kgs. The buyers were F and SA Edmondson, Netherhouses, Broughton Beck, Ulverston.

The firm of Andrew Harvey, Drum Farm, Dumfries, were in the money too with six cow and heifers averaging £1718.

The Wester Balbeggie herd from Fife sold their most recently calved cows and heifers of Holstein and Fleckvieh crosses to a top of £1100 and Colin Robb from Dinwoodie Green Farm, Lockerbie, sold the most recently calved cows and heifers from his British Friesian herd to peak at £1380.
