SCOTTISH beef breeders made their presence felt at a multi-breed show and sale of pedigree cattle at Newark, last weekend, either as buyers or sellers.

The event, which comprised Aberdeen Angus, Salers, Lincoln Red and Simmentals, also saw the dispersal of two Simmental herds to include those from Thursford and Bentley.

Forking out the top bid of 7500gns was John Lyle, Nether Pratis, Leven, Fife, who gets for his money, a 20-month-old Simmental bull from David and Lesley Sapsed, High Heath, Codicote, Hitchin. This was Heathbrow Governor, by the Dirnanean Welcome son, Heathbrow Ex Factor which is unbeaten in his class in the show ring and is now stockbull in the Ravensdale herd. The dam is Hockenhull Girlie 22, a Blackford Harvester daughter bought for 9000gns at the herd dispersal.

Next best amongst the Simmentals was a 4000gns sale for the breed champion at the pre-sale show, Sacombe Gladiator, a rising two-year-old from PB and JA Borlase, Sacombe Hill, Hertford. He is by Clonagh World Class and out of Saccombe Wanda-Wanse by Glenturk Nomad. The buyers were WR Eales and Son, Brook Hill, Peakling Magna, Leicester.

Also heading north to Scotland were the top two highest priced females from Dennis Mitchell's Thursford dispersal, from Thursford. David Lowry, Newsteadings, Cartland, Lanark, went to 4000gns for the seven-year-old cow, Thursford Holly 3, by Blair Rory and out of Thursford Holly. She sold with September-born bull calf by Scotland Hill Cairo and served to the same sire.

Later, Colin Soutar, Peasiehill, Arbroath, went to 3800gns for Thursford Ruffles 31, a five-year-old by Kilbride Farm Van Gogh out of a home-bred cow by Blair Rory. Included in this served transaction was her October-born heifer calf also by Hill Cairo.

Mr Soutar also bought two 13-month-old heifers by Hill Cairo, from the same home at 2600gns and 2400gns – Thursford Debs 34 and Debs 35.

A cracking line up of Lincoln Reds forward for the breed show and sale, saw trade peak at 6500gns for the 26-month-old bull, Foulness Usher, from East Yorkshire breeder, Chris Page, Oak Tree, Newport, Brough. This was the first son sold by St Fort Rolex – a bull bred by Andrew Mylius, Fife, that boasts numerous championships including the reserve inter-breed beef champion at the Great Yorkshire Show – out of the Market Stainton Kind-sired cow, Westacre Bianca. The buyer was W Mallon, The Old Hall, Little Fransham, Dereham, Norfolk.

Mr Mylius also enjoyed a good day with sales at 4200gns twice. First was St Fort Union Jack, an August 2015-born bull by Wragby Minstrel, which stood reserve champion male to St Fort Rolex at the Yorkshire, is out of St Fort Thora, and sold to R and I Mee, Oakley Grange, Hathern, Loughborough.

Minutes later, St Fort Universe, a Beverley Noble son out of St Fort Hetty, made the same money to Chris Page.

Aberdeenshire breeder, Susan Buchan, Auchmacoy, Ellon, was another in the money with a 5000gns sale in Auchmacoy Ulfred, an Auchmacoy Orlando son out of a home-bred daughter of Auchmacoy Langworth. He was knocked down to Michael Read, Hemingby, Lincolnshire.

Second top price amongst the Lincoln Reds was 5500gns paid by Severalles Farms, Adbury, Newbury, for NJ Barton's Highbarn Universe, a two-year-old son of Brackenhurst Ranger out of Highbarn Patricia, from Highbarn, Pott Shrigley, Macclesfield.

Lead priced Aberdeen Angus at 5000gns was Shadwell Lord Horatio, from Shadwell Estates, Suffolk, purchased by Hollinshead Farms, Nightingals Farm, Bentley, Warwickshire. This two-year-old is by Rawburn Rommel and out of Shadwell Lady Heather, by Netherallan Peter Pershore.

Another from the same home, Shadwell Fury, by Idvies Eland, then made 4300gns to Don Parkin and Sons, Manor Farm, Gateforth, Selby.

Salers peaked at 4000gns when Shropshire breeders, JL Hartley and Son, Holdgate Hall, Munch Wenlock, bought Rigel Pedigree's Rigel Kentucky, a rising two-year-old son of the French bull, Casimir, from Leven Fields, Middleton on Leven, Yarm.
