A GOOD show of Aberdeen-Angus and native-sired store cattle met an electric trade throughout at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ special sale of 837 at Thainstone, on Tuesday, where averages were well up on the year.

Averages included 505 Aberdeen-Angus bullocks at 243.6p per kg (+26.7p on the year); 140 Angus heifers at 222.5p (+21.2p); 165 native bullocks at 229.7p (+16.1p); and 27 native heifers at 218.8p (+32.7p).
A show of Angus cattle was judged by Jim Fowlie, Adziel, who picked out a 16-month-old bullock from H and I Sinclair, Braehead, Cairston, as his champion. He later backed his decision and bought it for £1400, the second top price of the day, as well as the reserve at £1260. That was a 19-month-old heifer weighing 516kg from J and E Strathdee, North Retannach.

Topping the trade at £1405, however, was a trio of Angus cross bullocks weighing 660kg from Mains of Pitlurg, Keith, while five Angus bullocks from Whiteley, Daviot, led the pence per kg trade at 282p. Angus heifers peaked at 250p for two weighing 296kg from Suquoy, South Ronaldsay, and £1225 for one at 590kg from Eastfield of Monaltrie, Ballater.

The native cattle were topped by Beef Shorthorn crosses at 264p for six bullocks weighing 286kg from Suquoy, and £1360 for a 692kg bullock from Northon, Cullerlie. Native heifers reached 244.7p for two Shorthorns at 474kg and £1290 for another Shorthorn weighing 584kg, all from Elsness, Sanday.
