WHILE no freshly calved cows were forward, heifers met a strong trade at the dispersal of the entire milking portion of ES Cole and Sons’ Winfarthing Holsteins at Beeston Castle last week.

The herd from Norfolk, which was established in the early 1950s, saw a top price of 2450gns paid for Winfarthing Vale 100, a VG85-classified Gillette Windbrook daughter that calved her second in January. She sold giving 34.5kg and back in calf to an Aberdeen-Angus bull, to a local Cheshire breeder.

The same buyer also paid 2050gns for two second calvers giving in excess of 30kg – Winfarthing Shottle Pennyroyal VG85 and Winfarthing Shottle Rosie VG88 – as well as Winfarthing Goldenboy Freedom 194 VG88, a third calver, and Winfarthing Gerard Judith 213 GP82, a second calver, for 1900gns apiece.

John Minshull, from Tean, Staffordshire, paid 2000gns for Winfarthing Homestead Rita 49 VG87, a third calver giving 38kg and due in November, as well as 1900gns for the second calver, Winfarthing Bossman Brightstar 6 GP80.

Another made 2000gns when R and ME Jones and Son, Llanfechell, Anglesey, paid that for Winfarthing Gerard Glade 87 GP81 which is due with her third in August,

A fourth animal matched previous 1900gns price tags when the Ex90-rated Winfarthing Masterpiece Hazel 110, a fourth calver giving 41kg, sold to Tony Wilson, Fradswell, Stafford.

Averages: 172 cows and milking heifers, £1248.28.
