PRIME lambs from R McMillan, Burnbank, Dalrymple, secured the overall championship at Craig Wilson’s annual show and sale of Suffolk lambs at Carlisle, on Monday, and sold for the top price of £120 or 279.1p per kg.
Weighing 43kg, the champion pen was knocked down to judge, WP Tulloch of Quality Butchers, Paisley.
In reserve was a pen scaling 46kg from R Stevenson, Langshaw, Carluke, which later sold for £118 or 256.5p to A Picken and Sons, Quality Butchers, Ayr.
The sale of 51 Suffolk lambs levelled at 253.5p per kg or £106 per head.
Also sold on the day were 1103 prime lambs which averaged 247.1p (-5.9p on the week). They sold to a top of 295p for a pen of 40kg Beltex lambs from CA Weir and Son, Gateside, and £122 for Beltex from Netherton.
Averaging 178.8p (-3p on the week), the firm’s sale of 189 prime hoggs saw a pen of Cheviots weighing 36kg hit a top of 204.2p, while a similar pen from Knockterra sold for £100.
Among the 298 cast ewes and tups, heavy ewes levelled at £78.11 and sold to a top price of £133.50 for a pen of Texel ewes from B Notman, Redding, Galston, while light types reached £74 for a pen of Blackfaces from J Kennedy and Son, Perryston, Ayr, to average £58.70.
Texel tups from JS Wilson and Son, Broadlie, Dunlop, topped at £121.50.
