A SHOW and sale of Texel-sired lambs held in conjunction with the Scottish Texel Sheep Breeders’ Club at Caledonian Marts’ Stirling centre, last week, was judged by Bill MacKinnon, from Scotbeef, who picked out a pen from Ian Campbell, Meikle Seggie, as his champion.

The trio weighing in at 41kg led the lightweight class for those bred out of anything other than Scotch Mules, and went on to sell to We Hae Meats for £116.

In reserve was the first prize pen from the heavyweight section, a 42.3kg trio from E Robertson, Skeoch, that sold to J Aitken Butchers, Alloa, for £110.

Overall, the 919 prime lambs peaked at £117 for a pen of Beltex from Doune Farms, while pens of Suffolks from Pitcairlie and Texels from Skeoch also hit £116. Leading the price per kg trade at 267p were Beltex from Cuiltburn, with Texels from Kinburn at 250p.

The entry of 919 lambs cashed in to average 211.5p per kg, a drop of 3.1p on the week but a rise of 27.5p on the year.

Also on offer were 580 cast sheep, where a Texel tup from Deanston Partnership, Rough Castle, topped at £130 and ewes sold to £120 for a Texel from Willie Brewster, Wester Borland.

Overall, the 289 heavy ewes averaged £89.07 with 212 export ewes at £51.36.
