Averages: 198 ram lambs, £1463.13 (+£234.91 for 12 more sold).

Breed records were again smashed amongst the ram lambs, when a ram lamb from Richard and John Wood and family's Kingledores flock was knocked down for a whopping 27,000gns.

Superceding last year's top sale of 25,000gns for a lamb from Jack and Tom Buckle, was Kingledores Crusader ET, a twin-born lamb from the 22-ewe flock based at Broughton, Biggar, purchased by Irish breeders, Wade an Alison McCrabbe, who own the Ardstewart flock at Raphoe, Co Donegal.

"Wade spied him at the Highland Show and we thought he looked even better at the sale," said Alison. He's just full of style and presence."

They get some of the best bloodlines in the business for that big purchase, with the dam, Kingledores Pearl, being a former Highland Show champion and top breeder having bred sons and gimmers to 5500gns. The sire is Glantre Armani, which was purchased at Welshpool last year for 2000gns after standing male champion.

Crusader himself is also a well known show winner having stood first at Lesmahagow, and second in his class and reserve male champion at the Highland.

Outwith that big seller, a further three lambs made 7000gns, with another four selling for 5000gns or more.

First to make 7000gns was Jock McMillan's Clary Chief ET, from the 35-ewe flock from Carse of Clary, Newton Stewart. This cracker by the imported sire, Henry/H/Vrijbos, is out of Clary Wild Thing – the Ayr Show champion in 2015, by the retained tup, Clary Supersonic. He was knocked down to Kenny Preston, Preston Farms, Omagh, Co Tyrone, Northern Ireland.

Paul Tippetts' first prize lamb and reserve male champion, Hackney Classic ET, from Lodge Hill, Park Lane, Shifnal, attracted the same money, selling to Procters Farm, Tatham Hall, Wray, Lancaster, whose sheep enterprise is managed by Jeff Aiken.

Another backed by the best of genetics, this lamb which was male champion and reserve overall at the Highland, is by the record priced Topflite Al Pacino, which was bought here last year for 60,000gns. The dam, Hackney What A Girl, by Scooby Doo, is a full sister to Hackney Wonderboy which was champion at Balmoral in May and bred the 7000gns Hackney Braveheart.

The reserve male champion from Balmoral and male champion at the Irish National, was the last to make 7000gns. This was Artnagullion Charlie Chaplin ET from Liz McAllister's flock from Parkgate, Kells, Northern Ireland. Equalling her previous best, this cracker is bred from this year's female champion at Balmoral, a home-bred ewe by the 12,500gns Woodies Snoop Dog, and sired by Ardstewart Blue Boy, purchased last year for 4500gns. Charlie Chaplin sold in a two-way split to Richard Wood, Kingledores and his cousin, Stuart Wood, of the Woodies flock from Woolhillock, Aberdeenshire.

Three Scottish breeders teamed up to buy Smart Ass Coco Pop ET, from Welsh breeder, DE Owen, from Rowen, Conwy, which made 6000gns. Bred from the privately purchased show ewe, Woodies Rice Crispie, whose full brothers have sold for 4200gns and 4000gns, Coco Pop is by the Godfather and sold to G Yarr, Whitton, Lethnot, Edzell; N Caul, Balkello Woodland House, Kirton of Aucherthouse, Forfar and S and A Moore, Mains of Balhall, Menmuir, Brechin.

Another from the same home then made 5000gns selling to D and LE Gregory, Lower hornacott, Boyton, Launceston. Smart Ass Corona ET, which was overall champion at the Welsh National Show, is by last year's champion, Ardstewart Aristocrat, and bred from Woodies Tweetypie.

Fingle Challener, the breed champion at the Royal Cornwall Show from Mrs CL Elworthy-Moorhouse, from East Fingle, Exeter, was another to hit the headlines, selling for 5500gns to Welsh breeder, WP Evans, Bodwrdin, Soar, Gwynedd.

Aberdeenshire breeders, Colin Mair, Muirfield, Everton of Auchry, Turriff; Stuart Wood; Jim Young, Muirton, Alford, and Ross and Kirsty Williams, Upper Tullochbeg, Huntly, also got in on the act forking out 5000gns for Dermot Castelloe's breed leader at Cheshire Show. This was Bailey Brook Captain ET, a son of Woodies Snoop Dog, bred from the 7500gns Airyolland Andromeda by Dooley Nepal.
