A strong demand for commercial breeding sheep dominated the Lleyn Sheep Society's annual sale at United Auctions, Stirling, on Monday, where buyers were keen to bid of larger pens of ewes and ewe lambs fit to go to the tup met a good trade.

Top price amongst the females was £180 per head, paid for a pen of five from Debbie McGowan, Incheoch, Blairgowrie, purchase by Hugh Kyle, South Queensferry.

Three pens hit £160 with the first being the third prize pen from Linda Jenkinson, Kirkby Stephen selling to S and J Corcoran, Newton Stewart.

Derek Steen, Moffat received the same money for a pen of 10 purchased by M and I Cross, Glenrothes, and David Alexander, Galston, also received £160 for his second prize pen of five from J Sloan, Milnathort.

Ewe lambs peaked at £100 per head for the first prize pen and reserve females at the pre-sale show from the Walling family, Farmstock Genetics, Selkirk, purchased by Hugh Kyle.

The same home also sold a pen of 15 for £95 to Kirkpatrick Farms, Dumfries, who also went to the same money for a pen of 20 from R and S Turnbull, Montrose.

Roseneath Farms, Helensburgh, also got in on the act, forking out £95 for a pen of 20 ewe lambs from JR Graham an Partners, Biggar .

A shearling ram from Hamish Goldie, Dumfries, topped his section at 700gns. This was Goldies Freelance, a son of a Lluest ram, purchased by NS Contracting, Grantown.

Next at 600gns, Hugh Kyle bought a shearling ram by Lochar Captain for 600gns from R Johnston and Son, Falkirk.

Averages: 329 gimmers, £140;124 ewe lambs, £92; 22 rams, £422.
