It was very much a ladies day at Harrison and Hetherington’s Black and White sale at Carlisle, when a red and white heifer from Caroline Gilmour and Sheila Yates’ 30-cow Eastford herd based between Castle Douglas and Sandyford, topped the sale at 9000gns.
Superceding the duo’s previous best of 8000gns paid here in 2015 for Eastford Tabitha, was Eastford Absolute Hotspot Red, a stylish 10-month-old heifer, paraded by Michael Yates, East Logan.
She is one of three embryo heifer calves from the American show cow, Starmark AD Hotstuff Red, which stood reserve grand champion at the Word Dairy Expo in 2012 and grand champion at the New York Spring Show the following year. Not just a pretty face either this red cow also boasts some impressive milk yields having produced 12,864litres in her third at 5.60%BF and 3.10%P, with her second lactation recording 10,414litres at 4.50%BF and 3.40%P.
The first Hotstuff to sell in Europe and the maternal sister to two other top show cows to include Miss Hot Mama Red Ex92 and Miss Real Hot Red Ex92, this youngster is sired by Apples Absolute Red and sold to Andrew Kennedy, of the Maineview herd from Northern Ireland, on behalf of the Arranview herd to establish a foundation family
The sale, which attracted bidders from seven countries to include Spain and Germany, also saw the highest price paid for a cow here, when Graham and Janette Kirkby and daughter Natasha’s Absolute Windbrook Adeen ET, made 8200gns. The Kirkbys who buy and sell embryos and cattle around Europe, and last year led the trade with a 15,000gns heifer, saw their freshly calved second calver, head to High Whinnow, Thursby, Carlisle, with James and Janice Taylor.
Recently classified VG88 a few days prior to the sale, Windbrook Adeen, is bred from Holmland Goldwyn Adeen ET Ex94 2E the show cow which made 14,500gns at the Holmland dispersal, while her grand dam is the equally well known Ex92-2E SP cow, Lavenham Adeen ET that was grand champion at AgriScot in 2012 and All Britain senior cow in 2013.
John McLean’s Priestland Holstein herd from Northern Ireland which runs alongside show winning Dairy Shorthorn, Ayrshire and Jersey females, also came up with the goods when Priestland 6147 Atwood James Rose ET, a yearling heifer made 8000gns.
Bred from the home-bred cow, Priestland 5235 PS James Rose ET Ex95-2E which boasts no fewer than 15 grand champion wins and this year secured the All Britain 4yr title, she is by Maple-downs-IG W Atwood, and sold to John and Bryan O’Connor, buying for their Bawnmore herd of 100 pedigree Holstein cows based at Kanturk, Co Cork, Eire. Atwood James Rose is also a great grand-daughter of the three time Royal Winter Fair Grand Champion Thrulane Jame Rose Ex97 – regarded by many as the best uddered cow in the history of the breed.
Just behind on 7500gns was one of the most talked about consignments – a Jersey heifer from the Futuredream herd owned by James Evans in Pembrokeshire, South Wales, which boasts an average classification score of Ex92.5 points.
Futuredreams Tequilas Excite Veronica, a nine-month-old calf by Tower Vue Prime Tequila and bred from the show cow, Futredreams Excitation Veronica Ex91, which gave 8455litres in her second at 5.62%BF and 4.01%P, was champion at the National Calf Show in the 2017. She was bought by the judge from the National Show, Richard Saxby, who together with his wife Carole, son Tom and daughters Hannah and Ellie, run the 20-cow Saxby herd from Waddington, Clitheroe, Lancs.
Young Alison Hunter (20), West Tarbrax, Shotts, got in on the act too, forking out 7000gns for Bob Lawrence’s Lynholme Brokaw Amyly 3, a 15-month-old heifer that stood first at the National Calf Show in August and reserve champion at the Lancashire calf show, from Grange over Sands.
The first heifer to sell in the UK directly from Italian Amyly family, she is bred from the VG87 Lynholme Windbrook Amyly ET, whose third dam is the LP100 Ex96-2E show cow, Toc Farm Allen Amyly. Sired by Mr Atwood Brokaw, she is to be housed at Sandyford, Monkton.
Matching the 7000gns bid was Heavenly SO Katrysha, a 10-month-old heifer bred from the VG85-2yr Miss Kats Knockout ET, which in turn was bred from Lovhill Goldwyn Katrysha Ex96 Ex97 MS that was supreme champion at the 2015 World Dairy Expo. Consigned by Heavenly Genetics in Lancashire, she is the first progeny from Katrysha to be sold in the UK and sired by Solomon. Heavenly SO Katrysha heads down to Essex, having been purchased by Peter Prior of Designer Holsteins.
Top price for Tom Cope and Isaac Lancaster was 6200gns paid by JR Morse, Capel Farm, Llysonnen Road, Carmarthen, for the seven-month-old heifer calf, Huddlesford Icow Rosann, bred from the reserve grand champion at this year’s UK Dairy Day. Her sire is Mr D Apple Diamondback.
Two calves made 6000gns to include Ali and Rachel Cook’s Auchensala Avalanche Liqueur Red ET, a 10-week-old heifer and the first to sell in Europe, from the Canadian Red Avalanche show cow family. She is by Dymentholm Mr Apples Avalanche and sold to Roger Morse of Capel Farm, Carmarthen, Dyfed.
Minutes later, Leanne Hedges, herdsperson for Jonathan Lochhead’s Kedar Brown Swiss herd at Dumfries, received the same money for Headgelea Lucke Kandie Krush ET, a six-week-old red heifer bred from the American show cow, Luck-E Advent Kandie Red ET. This Luck-E Awesome Red daughter was the second calf registered with the Hedgelea prefix and sold to P and S Haffey buying for their Glasson herd from Portadown, Craigavon, Co Armagh.
Meanwhile, it was Mr Lochhead’s Kedar Aurora, a 10-month-old heifer that topped the Brown Swiss trade at 5000gns, purchased by Brent Crothers, New House Farm, Shrewsbury. She is by Jenor, and out of the VG87-3yr Kedar Alaska that was honourable mention grand champion at UK Dairy Expo in 2017. Her third dam is Ace Arve Ex97, a former grand champion at Swiss Expo.
