FEMALES met a strong demand at Robert Rennie’s sale of the entire adult portion of his Texel flock from Sydenham, Ednam, where trade peaked at 4000gns.
Built on a strong commercial basis, the flock has produced rams for sale at Kelso, where 54 have cashed in to average £995 over the years, but as Robert and his partner, Becca Oldham, have taken on a contract farming position on a hill farm, the continental breed was dispersed.
Selling for that top price to Welsh breeder Esmor Evans, of Monfa, Cwernaffield Road, Mold, was a 2015-born College ewe bought at Ted Fox’s dispersal for a fraction of that 4000gns. Sired by Beeford Pimpernel and out of a Brijon-bred ewe by Caereinion Regis, she changed hands due with a pair to Duhonw You Belter, bought for £8600 at Builth Wells earlier this year.
Also selling south to Wales with Mr Evans for 2200gns was another by Pimpernel, out of a Moor Top Unbeatable-sired Brijon ewe. She was also served by Duhonw You Belter.
Selling for the second top price of 2700gns to SH Oliver, Nesbit Cottages, Wooler, was a two-year-old by Teiglum Stifler, which was bought several years back for £3200 at Kelso Ram Sales and has been instrumental to the flock’s breeding. Out of a Tweed ewe by Millar’s Monty, she was again served by the Duhonw sire.
Her full ET sister, also served by You Belter, sold to Andrew Jack, Kilcoy, Muir of Ord, for 2500gns.
Matching that 2500gns price tag was one of two to sell to Duncan Macniven, of Craigfarg, Glenfarg, Perth. That was the first of the gimmers and a full sister to the previous two lots, which was served by Duhonw You Belter.
Mr Macniven paid a further 2200gns for another Teiglum Stifler daughter in lamb to You Belter, with this one out of a Tamnamoney Ned-sired Penparc ewe.
The last to break the 2000gns barrier when sold for 2100gns to John Guiry, Town Farm, Glanton, Alnwick, was another 2015-born ewe from the same flush as the previous money makers, which also sold served by the Duhonw tup.
