LIMOUSINS from Nethermyres headed up Lawrie and Symington's sale of 38 prime cattle when a 529kg heifer realised 260p per kg and a 630kg bullock sold for 258p and £1625.40 to top the gross trade.

Heifers (21) also reached £1480.56 for a 597kg Limousin from West Bog and averaged 230p, while the six bullocks levelled at 240p.

Beltex topped the 454 prime hoggs at 204.4p from Fawsyde, Kinneff, and £99.50 four times from Easter Balgillo. They averaged 187.2p (+1p on the week).

Cast sheep (71) sold to £97 for Texel ewes from Westhall.

Huntly

HOGGS met a firmer trade and many more could have been sold at United Auctions' sale of 1207, which peaked at 203p per kg for 39kg Charollais from Craigieview, Aberchirder, and £110 for 57kg Texels from 6 Ewan Crescent, Macduff.

Heavy ewes were in short supply as 513 cast ewes reached £108 for Texels from Logie.

Dumfries

BEST sorts were easily sold at C and D Auction Marts' recent sale of 13 prime cattle where bullocks reached 231p for a Limousin from D and E Lockhart, Fauldingcleugh, and heifers sold to 230p twice for Limmies from R Neill, Upper Tinwald.

All classes of OTM cattle continued to meet demand as cows sold to 176p for a Limousin from Belridding and £1271.40 for a Charolais off Carterton. Beef cows (25) averaged 127.6p while dairy-bred cows (78) levelled at 108.2p having peaked at 151p and £1070.10 for a Frisian from Park.

There was a plain offering of prime hoggs as 817 hit 215p for Texels from Slacks and £93.50 for heavy Texels from Lochhill.

Cast sheep (452) sold firmer on the week and to £136.50 for Texel ewes from Maryfield.

Thainstone

AT Aberdeen and Northern Marts's recent prime sale, seven bullocks levelled at 220.4p per kg and 26 heifers averaged 225.8p.

They peaked at 244p and £1500.15 for Limousin heifers from Cairncoullie, Glenkindie, weighing 530kg and 685kg, respectively. Bullocks sold to 238p for a 540kg Limousin from Waterside Forbes, Tullynessle, and £1436.50 for another weighing 650kg from Nether Mains, Torphins.

A mixed show of cast cattle met a firm trade as the 226 beef cows sold to 180.3p for a Shorthorn off Acrestrype, Auchterless, and £1530 for a Limousin from Middleton of Potterton, Aberdeen. They averaged 140.1p (-2.9p on the week).

Bulls (13) averaged 123.2p (-3.7p) and sold to 135.3p and £1570 for a Charolais from North Redhill, Rothiemay, with another from Bankhead, Clatt, matching that £1570.

Hogg averages improved on the week as 1882 averaged 193.6p (+8.7p) with the 1178 SQQs at 197.2p (+8.6p). Texels topped at 231.7p for a 41kg pen from Shougle, Birnie, and £103 for a 73kg pen from 35 Main Street, New Deer.

Stirling (Cal)

CALEDONIAN Marts sold 96 prime cattle last week, where Limousins topped the entry at 250p per kg on four occasions.

That was paid for a bullock from Learielaw, Broxburn, as well as heifers from Knockhouse, Crossfield; Faskine, Airdrie, and Learielaw. Per head, a Charolais bullock from South Flanders, Kippen, made £1752.24 and a heifer from Boquhan (Hyslop) made £1593.

In all, bullocks averaged 214p with heifer at 227p.

Cast cows were easily sold and peaked at £1480 and 178p for a Limousin from Meadowend, Clackmannan, with dairy cows to 143p from Barbeth, Cumbernauld, and £810 from The Glen, Falkirk. Beef cows averaged 135p with dairy cows at 89p.

Longtown

HEAVY and best quality hoggs met the best demand with well-fleshed hoggs keenly sought after at C and D Auction Marts' sale of 5869 which cashed in to average 189.9p per kg (SQQ 190.6p).

They sold to 305p for a pen of Beltex from DS and RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthull, as well as £134 for a Texel from Miss A Preacher, Holylee, Peebles.

Cast ewes and rams (4056) sold around £10 dearer on the week, bar plainer ewes, and peaked at £158 for Texel ewes from both A Campbell, Strawfrank, and M Watson, Four O Boot. Hill ewes sold to £75 for Cheviots from Messrs Common, Crossdykes, and rams hit £132 for Texels from B Storey, Woodhead.

Cast cows sold to 128p and £915 for a British Blue from CA Grieve and Sons, Snab Farm, with a Simmental from TJC Bradbury, Satchells, also making 128p.

Stirling, United Auctions (Thursday 25th January) sold 5056 prime sheep comprising 3362 old season lambs selling to an average of 184.5ppkg and 1694 ewes and rams.
