NORTHERN IRELAND Beef Shorthorn breeder, James Porter, came up trumps to sell the top priced bull and female at 4000gns and 4500gns, respectively, at a breed show and sale at Carlisle.

Sale leader was one of the youngest in the catalogue, Uppermill Lillian Jill, a polled May 2016-born roan heifer by Dunsyre Demetri, bred from the Uppermill Jinks daughter, Uppermill Jackie. Female champion and reserve overall at the pre-sale show, Jill was knocked down to Derbyshire producer, D Watkins, Roundhill Farm, Buxton.

Mr Porter also secured the male championship and supreme overall with Uppermill Rama, a two-year-old dark polled roan bull also by Demetri but out of Uppermill Joanna, a Trunley Zorba daughter. Stewart McIntosh, Outer Huntly, Selkirk, was the last man in on this entry at 4000gns.

Second top bull at 3000gns at this sale which had to be rescheduled following the snow at the beginning of March, was Bill and Jane Landers' Cairnsmore King Kong, a rising two-year-old by Ballylinney Gently, from Bargaly, Newton Stewart. Third in his class, he is bred from a home-bred Captain Vortrek of Upsall daughter and headed home to Nether Ernambrie, Clarebrand, Castle Douglas, having been purchased by WT McMiken.

The reserve female, Galla Kirsty Wildeyes, another May 2016-born polled heifer, from Lanarkshire breeder, Jim Frame, Wiston, Biggar, realised 1750gns to WJ Fenemore, Manor Grove, Tingewick, Buckingham. This served white youngster is by Kidston Rambo 1 and out of Bon-Accord Sunny Wildeyes 3.

An added feature of the sale was the dispersal of RJ Baudains Trowbridge herd from Muscoates, Nunnington, staged due to ill health. Top price here at 3600gns came for Knockenjig Tessa, a four-year-old roan originally bought from his breeders, David and Rosemary Dickie, at Stirling in 2015 for 3000gns.

Tessa is by Tofts Whisky, out of a previous Knockenjig Tessa by Meonhill Charlie Champlin, and sold with August-born heifer calf by Tamhorn Glen at foot and served again to Glen, to T McMillan, Eskechraggan, Rothesay, Isle of Bute.

Selling up to Banffshire for 2700gns, with C and L Murphy, Stripeside, Aberlour, was Burnfoot Victoria Imogen, the reserve champion from Rydale Show. This dark roan calved heifer is by Galla Flashman, out of Burnfoot Gloria and sold with October-born heifer calf by Tamhorn Glen and served again to Glen.

The McConnells from Gass Farm, Glenluce, Newton Stewart, bought the next two calved cows at 2600gns and 2400gns. Dearest was Clipper C864 of Upsall, a six-year-old by Comet of Upsall that sold due in next month to Glen.

Minutes later, Oakleigh Lovely Gina, a five-year-old by Blelack Masterpiece with heifer calf by Tamhorn Glen and due again to the same sire was acquired for 2400gns.
