Averages: 32 bulls, £3986.72. Harman reduction – Six cow and calves, £2004

Charolais bulls met a solid commercial trade at Welshpool on Saturday, where 32 bulls sold to average just short of £4000 from a lead bid of 6500gns.

Sale leader was an 18-month-old entry from the Barker family, Caylers Charolais, Nuthampstead, Hertfordshire, that stood first in his class at the pre-sale show. Caylers Mclaren, by Gretnahouse Ultimate and out Thruton Dominator daughter, Caylers Jemma, was knocked down to ER Hollinsworth and Son, buying for their herd based at Middleton, Manchester.

Caylers bulls were in demand with the herd selling three to average £5530, to include the next highest priced lot at 5800gns. This was paid by R Napper, West Hagbourne, Oxfordshire, for the November 2016-born Caylers Minstrel, a son of the Irish-born Rosanna Jupiter, out of Caylers Gigi, again by Dominator.

Flintshire vet Esmor Evans from Mold, also enjoyed a good day, bagging the pre-sale championship, while his four bulls cashed in at £4331. Dearest at 5500gns was the champion, the 19-month-old Maerdy Mauard, by the 10,000gns, Blelack Fabulousout of the Vald'or-Ra-sired Maerdy Hwylus. The buyers were DL and LE Davies, Llanegryn, Gwynedd.

Selling at 5200gns to WT Jones and Co, Tywyn, Gwynedd, was the December 2016-born Esgob Majestic from Gareth Jones, Cwntrimnach, Gwynedd. Majestic is by the 26,000gns Carlisle junior champion Anside Excalibur and out of Esgob Diva, by Thrunton Virginian.

Two lots made 5000gns to include the 19-month-old Wesley Evolution son, Trannon Montgomery from John Williams, Caersws, Powys. Montgomery’s dam Trannon Hanna is by Wernvale Chico and he caught the eye of GE Davies and Sons, Llanrhaeadr, Shropshire.

Also at 5000gns selling to A Jones, Bettws Y Coed, Gwynedd, was a 17-month-old offering from Kevin Thomas, Capel Iwan, Carmarthenshire. Moelfre Morgan is by the 12,500gns Balmyle Impression, and out of Moelfre Forgetmenot, which goes back to the French-bred Texan.

The small reduction of six cow and calves from the Harman family, Chesham, Buckinghamshire, peaked at 2400gns for the mother and daughter duo – 2014-born Silver Janet and her four-month-old heifer calf Silver Nectar. Janet is by Thrunton Fairfax, while her daughter is sired by Barnsford Jubilant. This outfit sold to the Hollinsworth family, Middleton.
