The entry of 10 dairy bulls proved the star attraction at the Month-End sale at Beeston Auction Mart, producing the top three prices at 2700gns twice and 2500gns.

The sale attracted an entry of 160 head of fresh calved cows and heifers, bulls forward for the Western Holstein Club’s spring show and sale and the dispersal of unregistered British Friesians from Nicholls Farms, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.

First to sell at 2700gns was an entry from saw Mick and Jean Gould's Woodmarsh herd from Shrewsbury. Woodmarsh Mailer, a 14-month-old Holstein bull is by Larcrest Cayle and bred from 11 successive generations of VG or Ex classified cows, being out of Woodmarsh Lauthority Melody 177 Ex90. The buyers were DE Pyle, Treasbeare Farm, Clyst-Honiton, Exeter.

The Aintree herd from Shordley Hall, Hope, sold the second 2700gns bull along with the 2500gns entry. Dearest for herd owner, R Pilkington was Aintree Sterling, a yearling son of Topcroft Pesky Trix bred from 10 generations of Ex or VG cows purchased by Willis Dairy Farmers, Fields Farm, Cholmondeley. His dam, Aintree Armstead Secret boasts four lactations in excess of 10,000litres.

Lancashire producers, GW and J Mercer, Croftlands, Holcombe Brook, bought the 2500gns bull, Aintree Primo ET, a 50% Friesian bull and maternal brother to the 9200gns Skyhigh Quintin Pauline. This yearling is by Topcroft Pesky Trix and bred from Blackisle Pauline 71.

Some 48 fresh calved cows and heifers were also forward and saw a 100% clearance with a buoyant trade particularly for the middle and lower range.

Top price lot at £2100 was a freshly calved Shot Trigger daughter from WHG Dimelow, Malpas, which changed hands giving 38kg to A and H Mayer, Stoke-on-Trent.

Just behind, on £2020 was a second calved cow from D and E Monk, Ormskirk, giving 42kg. This Mr Sam daughter was bought by A and H Mayer, Upper Heakley, Stoke on Trent.

Leading the dispersal of unregistered British Friesians at £1550 was a second calved cow due her third in October to Skyhigh Patrol. She sold giving 26kg to RH Lew and Son, Oswestry.

Averages: 28 cows, £1271.43; 18 milking heifers £1553.08; eight Holstein bulls £1987.50; 96 British Friesian’s £1053.41.
