A GOOD entry of 630 store cattle sold through Harrison and Hetherington's Borderway Mart, last week, where a packed ringside of buyers ensured all classes were keenly bid for.

Heifers sold to extreme rates and to £1355 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Coates, Beck Hall, Canonbie, while bullocks reached £1300 for a pen of five Limousins from Thornington Farm.

Dingwall

Store and breeding cattle met a buoyant demand at Dingwall and Highland Marts' sale which included the 10th anniversary of Luings and a selection of pedigree Highland cattle.

By the end of the day Highland bullocks sold to £385 from Culnaha, Nigg, with heifers from the same home peaking at £405.

Store bullocks (19) peaked at £1060 for a pair of Shorthorn crosses from Craigroy, Elderton.

Luings led the breeding cattle with a Luing cow with twin calves from RM and MJ McCall, Inverbrora, Brora, selling to P Ronaldson, Killimster Mains, Wick at 3200gns while bulls peaked at 3300gns for a two-year-old from AL and AC MCall, Culmaily, purchased by GH Heron and Sons, Hope Farm, Longframington.

Pedigree Luings met a flying trade with 45 bulling heifers selling to average £1588.77 from a top price of 1950gns paid twice for 25-month-old heifers from G MacRae, Kintail, Newton of Ferintosh, selling to J Pate and Sons, Mossilee, Galashiels.

Yearling heifers cashed in at £774.38, peaking at 1150gns twice for heifers from S Renwick, Inverbroom, Ullapool, purchased by Messrs McKenzie, Craiglands, Wester Craiglands, Fortrose.

And, the 20 Sim/Luing heifers which averaged £1001.32, hit a top of 1200gns on four occasions – twice from AL and AC McCall, Culmaily and twice from J Lawrie, Tillyrie, Kinross. They were purchased by James Stirrat, Skelmorlie, Ayrshire and DSC North, Beechwood, Achilty, respectively.

ABERDEEN-Angus cross bullocks topped United Auctions' sale of 1591 store cattle when a 240kg entry from Barfillan made 291.70p and another weighing 674kg from High Mathernock sold for £1390.

The 917 bullocks cashed in to average 230.07p, while 599 heifers levelled at 218.14p having sold to 286.20p for a 302kg Charolais cross from Glenrath and £1310 for a 586kg Limousin cross from Dalbrack.

The 65 black and white bullocks levelled at 154.60p having hit 196.0p per kg and £1070 for a 546kg Holstein Friesian cross from Norrieston.

The 10 young bulls which averaged 201.30p were led by Charolais crosses at 209.50p from Drumoider and £1380 for the same from West Carse.

Cast cows sold to 201.80p for a Limousin cross from Monzie Farms and £1630 for a British Blue cross from Whitrighill while five dairy cows cashed in at 124.56p and sold to 141.80p and £925 for a Holstein Friesian cross from High Branchal. Overall,153 beef-bred cows averaged 149.26p with five dairy-breds at 124.56p.

Store and breeding sheep (436) saw breeders sell to £206 for Texel gimmers with twin lambs from Hole O Clean.

Quality sorts maintained recent high rates at Craig Wilson's sale of 717 store cattle at Ayre where 423 beef bullocks averaged 227.4p per kg or £838.90 and 226 heifers cashed in at 215.6p or £841.57 per head.

Top price was £1290 paid for a Simmental bullock from High Tarbeg or 277.2p per kg for Limousins from Bickethall.

Heifers sold to £1230 for a Simmental from Clevance and 242.9p for a Limousin from High Kilbride.

Dairy bullocks hit a top of £860 or 197.7p per kg from West Newton, to average 155.3p or £616.36 for 59.

Also forward were18 store hoggets and 192 ewes, gimmers and hoggs with lambs at foot. Leading this section at £205 was a pair of Texel gimmers with twin Beltex lambs from Holehouse, Ochiltree.

A USEFUL selection of store cattle sold well at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' sale of 1508 head where 775 bullocks averaged 233.2p per kg and 683 heifers levelled at 221.5p.

They sold to 307.7p for a 312kg Aberdeen-Angus heifer from Burness, Firth, and £1500 for a pair of 520kg Salers heifers from Croftbain, Tomnavoulin.

Bullocks reached 286.8p for a 380kg Limousin from Westerton, Echt, and £1385 for a pair of 640kg Charolais from Mill of Newton, Insch.

The 29 bulls peaked at 255p for a pair of 298kg Charolais from Pittenkerrie, Glassel, and £1090 for a 564kg Limousin from Muirden of Cranna, Aberchirder.

Orkney and Shetland bullocks sold to 283.3p for Limousins from Lower Langaskule, Twatt and £1270 for 544kg Limmys from Laithe, Tenston, Sandwick. Heifers hit a top of 307.7p for a 312kg Aberdeen-Angus from Burness, Firth and £1165 for a 546kg Simmental from WR Baillie and Co, Biggings, Toab.

Ewes with lambs again met a flying trade with Mule hoggs and lambs reaching record levels at £140 per head with singles from Bogiebrae, Rhynie.

Store hoggs (228) sold to £88.50 for Cheviots from West Cairneywhing Croft, New Pitsligo, while 731 feeding ewes and rams peaked at £127 for Continentals from Newbigging, Harray.
