Centre records and indeed UK records – unless you know better – for commercial beef breeding cattle were smashed at Caledonian Marts' show and sale of heifers with calves at Stirling on Monday, when an outfit from Craig and Katreen Malone, sold for a whopping £7100.

The couple from Pitcairn, Cardenden in Fife, also produced the champion winners which sold for the second top price of £6400, while their consignment of 11 heifers and calves cashed in at just short of £4000.

Highlight of the day was the sale of their Limousin cross British Blue cross heifer which sold with Limousin cross heifer calf at foot by the stockbull Ronick Jojo, for £7100 Gordon Cameron, Newton Cottage, Acharacle, Argyll. She was originally bought at Carlisle as a bulling heifer.

The couple's champion winner, a similarly bred heifer bought out of Dumfries market also surpassed the previous centre record of £5800, again set by the couple in 2015. She changed hands with heifer calf by the AI sire, Lodge Hamlet, for £6400 again to Mr Cameron.

A Limousin cross heifer, also with heifer calf, but from John McAlister, West Thomaston, Banknock, picked up the reserve honours and a price tag of £4400. This outfit headed south with Gary Bell, Haasside, Lockerbie.
