A GREAT day out at Scotsheep at Kings Arms, Ballantrae, concluded with the sale of ewe hoggs of various breeds, where outwith the 1200gns top price reported in last week's issue, trade peaked at 600gns for a pair of Blackfaces from William Stevenson's neighbouring Balrazzie flock.
His duo were both home-bred daughters of a £4000 Whelphill, a sire which also bred the ewe hogg, Erin – the breed champion winner at Ayr Show for Mr Stevenson – and sold to Andrew Fletcher, Laigh Hatton, Kilbarchan. This pair also stood first in their class at the pre-sale show.
A strong demand for Blackface females saw the breed also attract the next best when a pair from Andrew Kay and sons Robert and Andrew, Gass, Straiton, made 350gns each to Northern Ireland breeder, Owen Harkin. They are both by a £20,000 Auldhouseburn.
The real finale however saw Hamish Wilson, triumph in the supershear shearing competitions, ahead of Ross Gibson in second; Archie Paterson in third and Callum Shaw in fourth place
