Stirling (UA)
IT was Aberdeen-Angus cattle from Neilstonside that headed up the gross trade at United Auctions, last week, when a 640kg bullock and a 622kg heifer both realised £1220 apiece. 
Per kg, a 456kg Limousin cross bullock from Netherglinns topped at 240.1p while a 450kg Limmy cross from Townhead of Carruchan headed up the heifers at 228.9p. 
In all, the 186 bullocks averaged 190.96p with 190 heifers at 192.59p. 
Averaging 146.84p, the 79 dairy-bred bullocks reached 169.9p and £900 for a Friesian from High Branchal. 
Cast cows sold to 180.6p for a Salers from Portpatrick as well as £1270 for a Limousin from Woodhead of Mailer as the 62 beef-bred cows averaged 133.69p. Dairy cows (15) averaged 97.72p having peaked at 112.7p and £845 for a Holstein from Bandirran. 
On Monday, UA sold 4923 store lambs and feeding sheep at its opening sale where lambs peaked at £72.50 for Texel crosses from Ashintully. 
Breed averages were back on the year – Suffolk cross, £59.49 (-£5.34 on the year); Texel cross, £59.11 (-£4.10); Beltex cross, £61.25 (-43p); Cheviot, £52.63 (-£2.71); Mule, £51.60 (-£3.58); Blackface, £35 (-£2.50).

Carlisle
HARRISON and Hetherington attracted an entry of 414 store cattle where well-fleshed sorts were very much in demand as the sale peaked at £1310 for a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs McKie, Lawrence Holme, followed closely at £1300 for a dairy-bred Limousin bullock from Messrs Miller, Tarn Lodge. 
At the monthly breeding cattle sale a few days later, it was the dispersal on behalf of Messrs Baldwin, Landgate, that led the females at £2350 for a pedigree Limousin cow with heifer calf, followed at £2300 for a similar outfit. 
Messrs Case and Son, Dendron, had a part reduction sale which topped at £1950 for a Limousin cross cow and calf, while William Timm, Laburn Court, sold a Limousin cross bulling heifer for £1920.
There was a great demand for stock bulls which sold to £3800 and £3400 for British Blues from Messrs Baldwin. 
On the same day, the annual early breeding ewe sale met a stronger demand than anticipated where older and working ewes were well bid for while empty gimmers were harder to cash. 
Topping the sale at £230 per head were two pens of Texel gimmers from Robert Skelton, Newhall, whose entry of 109 gimmers averaged £208.06.
The sale also saw the annual consignment of continental and Suffolk cross ewes from Mike Lawson, Pasture House, top at £200 per head for two-shear Texel ewes as the run of Suffolk cross gimmers and two-shears levelled at £163.66, while the run of Beltex cross and Dutch Texel gimmers averaged £184.92.

Wigton
MORE lambs could have been sold to advantage at Hopes Auction Company’s opening show and sale of 822 store lambs where the judge, Anthony Skelton, presented the championship rosette to a pen from Robert Atkinson, Beck Hill Farms, which later realised £91 per head. 
The run of 248 Beltex lambs from Beck Hill Farms averaged £88.77 having topped at £130 for a pen of four, while the sale averaged £77.80.
Trade for the 634 continental and Mule breeding sheep was easier on the year as buyers were selective. The sale reached £300 per unit for the show-winning pen, 10 Beltex crosses from P Bartholomew, as the sale averaged £130.22.

Ayr
TRADE at Craig Wilson was easier for store cattle with plainer sorts worst affected as the sale peaked at 240p per kg for Limousin bullocks from Howcommon and £1165 for Charolais and Aberdeen-Angus bullocks from Laigh Corton. 
Heifers reached £1090 for an Angus from Borland and British Blues from Holmpark, as well as 220.3p for Limousins from Barneil. 
The sale saw 88 bullocks average 201.3p or £805.06 while 80 heifers levelled at 199.6p or £704.14. 
The 35 dairy-bred bullocks averaged 128.3p or £479.86 having sold to 160.6p and £795 from South Biggart.

Thainstone
BULLOCKS from Farmton, Tough, headed up Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ sale of 107 store cattle when a pen of three Limousins weighing 544kg made 231.6p per kg and a pair of 626kg Simmentals realised £1340. 
Charolais from Muiryheadless, Insch, led the heifer trade at 209.89p for a 398kg pair and £930 for a pen of four weighing 454kg as the 58 heifers averaged 200.5p with 49 bullocks at 207.6p. 
Of the 113 new season store lambs, which met a keen demand, it was Texel crosses from Clinterty, New Aberdour, that topped at £76. 
The 702-strong entry of feeding sheep hit £121 for continental rams from Bankhead, Durris, with ewes to £120 for pure Texels from Mid Haddo, Fyvie.

Darlington
THERE was a good clearance rate at the opening sale of breeding sheep at Darlington Farmers’ Mart, where the high-end prices of last year were lacking but buyers were willing to dip their toe into the early breeding waters. 
Heading up the entry at £152 per head was a pen of Texel-sired gimmers out of Cheviot Mules from Thornton Park, Thirsk, which sold to RA Patterson and Son, Whitehouse. 
A show was judged by Ben Cowton, of NG Beveridge, Low West House, where the champion pen, Texel-sired gimmers from I Belt, Normanby Lodge, sold to NG Beveridge for £140 apiece. 
On paper, lambs were back £3.60 compared to 2017 averages but the sale met a 100% clearance to average £54.57, peaking at £87 for Texels from BR and S Fell, Nafferton Farm.

Castle Douglas
STORE cattle met a stronger trade than anticipated at Wallets Marts’ sale of 114 store and OTM cattle on Tuesday, where Limousin bullocks from AJ Sharp and Son, Barscarrow, topped at £1290 and 227.7p per kg. 
Among the heifers it was a British Blue from R Hamilton, Newton, that topped at £1240 while a pair of Salers crosses from MH and JR Weir, Falbae, made 213.9p. 
Bullocks averaged 206.5p while heifers levelled at 195.7p.
Cast cows sold to 169p and to £1240.46 for British Blues from T Robb, Trolane, and averaged 134p.

TRADE was for store lambs was animated from start to finish with all breeds meeting an exceptional trade at C and D Auction Marts’ sale of 2136 on Tuesday. 
They sold to £83 for Texels from Towsbank with the annual consignments from Messrs Bradbury, Satchells, and Messrs Jardine, Fairgirth, both reaching £65.50. 
A small entry of store cattle reached £985 for a Limousin heifer from AJ Raine, Hazelgill, with bullocks to £950 for a British Blue from M Benson, Sycamore Drive.
