JUST shy of 40 entries were forward for the 10th anniversary of Hexham and Northern Marts' Young Farmers' Calf Wintering Competition at Hexham, where judge, Hugh Dunlop, Ochiltree, found his supreme winner in a black Limousin cross heifer from Haltwhistle YFC handler, Ben Moralee.
The youngster, who was winning the award for the second year in succession, also bagged the trophy for the best turned out animal. His heifer, bred at Lands Farm, topped the sale at £1400, leaving Ben with a £350 margin.
Reserve champion was the second prize heifer from Jodie Wigham, also of Haltwhistle YFC, whose heifer later sold for £1370, to give her a profit margin of £220.
The award for the greatest profit margin went to first time competitor and one of the youngest entrants, Harry Willey, of Broomfield Farm, Chopwell, who had only just celebrated his 12th birthday the day before. A member of Whitley Chapel YFC, Harry had purchased his black Limousin cross bullock, bred from a Shorthorn cross Galloway mother by Messrs Walton, Toft House, Otterburn, for just £600 at the traditional Bellingham sale of suckled calves in October, achieved a margin of £440.
The new inter-club challenge competition which was open to clubs with three or more competitors, saw Whitley Chapel YFC triumph with six entrants achieving the highest combined average of £314.16 per animal. Haltwhistle YFC came second with 13 competitors achieving an average of £211.53 per animal.
