Beltex hoggs have surpassed 600p per kg, with average prices beginning to stabilise. Here is our weekly round-up of primestock sales from the ring.

Newton Stewart

Some 579 sheep sold at Craig Wilson's sale witnessed 453 hoggs average 363.63p per kg.

Prices peaked at 455p for Beltex from R Templeton and Co, Carslae, and to £216 for a Texel from Margot McBurney, South Clutag.

Cast sheep sold to £220 for a Texel ewe from B and R Westby, Craigenquarroch.


Dumfries

Texel hoggs topped C and D Auctions' sale at 422p per kg from J Brown and Son, Barnbarroch and to £215 per head from J Muir, Cleughbrae.

Hoggs balanced out at 398p per kg.

The same breed led the cast sheep at £296 for M Craig, Glenhowan.


Huntly

United Auctions had forward 1024 old season lambs which averaged 380.15p per kg.

A top price of 454p was paid for 48kg Texels from Tomnavoulin, Ballindalloch, and to £240 for more of the same breed weighing 67kg from North Dorlaithers, Turriff.

Cast sheep sold to £208 for a Texel ewe from Gordonstone, Clatt.


Longtown

An average of 408.3p per kg was achieved for 6160 hoggs at C and D Auction Marts' weekly sale.

Beltex from A Taylor, Heatheryhall, Lanark, secured the top prices of 537p and £285.

Texel cast ewes from W and C Ingram, Logie Durno, Inverurie, made £332.

A Blue Grey from WD and R Elliot, Burnfoot of Ewes, Langholm, led the cast cattle at 244p and £1390.


Stirling (UA)

Beltex hoggs secured the top prices at United Auctions' weekly sale, having sold to 619p per kg from Ballechin, and to £261 from Cuiltburn, to average 396.94p.

Cast sheep sold to £296 for Texel ewes from Broomknowes.


Stirling (Cally)

Heifers and bullocks averaged 299p per kg and 301.5p respectively at Caledonian marts' sale of 67 prime cattle.

A British Blue heifer from Ross Bros. Wardhead, Strichen, led the sale at 340p and £2230.

Bullocks sold to 330p and £2112 for a Limousin from DS and RC Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Muthill.

Cast cattle averaged 179p and sold to 209p for a red poll cross from L Laird, Lochhead and to £1680 for an Aberdeen Angus from Rathillet Farms, Cupar.

Beltex again from Easter Ochtermuthill, topped the hogg trade at 540p and £232, having levelled at 371.22p.

Cast sheep attained £234 for a Texel tup from D MacGregor, Burnhead.


Thainstone

An entry of 82 prime cattle was forward at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' sale where bullocks sold to 301p per kg for a 530kg Limousin cross from Whiteside, Tullynessle, and to £2261.60 for a 880kg Charolais cross from Bogloch, Lumphanan.

Limousin crosses also led the heifers at 327p for a 530kg entry from Pityot, Bridge of Muchalls and to £1930.50 for a 650kg animal from Stoneyhill, Keith-hall.

Young bulls sold to 294p or £2440.20 for a 830kg Limousin from Mains of Elrick, Auchnagatt.

A 1086kg Limousin cow from Easterside, Dunottar, realised £2310.

A 48kg Beltex from Woodhead, Cairness, led the old season lambs (4532) at 608p and £292, having cashed in at 390.7p.

Cast sheep averaged £127.44 and sold to £284.50 for Texels from The Cottage, Wardes.


St Boswells

Harrison and Hetherington sold 142 prime cattle at their sale where 52 bullocks averaged 292p per kg and 88 heifers cashed in at 295p.

Bullocks reached 322p on two occasions, coming from Penston and Learielaw, and to £2310 from Whitrighill.

Cattle from Penston, also led the heifers at 334p, whilst top per head of £2175.40 came from Wester Middleton.

Young bulls from Blinkbonny, sold to £2097.20 and 214p.

Cast cattle averaged 200p and sold to 232p for Wester Middleton, and to £1613.48 for Greenhead.

Some 1110 hoggs also met a buoyant demand having averaged 390p and sold to 466p for Beltex from Newton, Crathie, and to £225 for Suffolk crosses.

A Texel ewe from N Elliot, 2 Duke Street, led the cast sheep at £240, with this section levelling at £142.95.


Carlisle

Texels led the hogg trade at Harrison and Hetherington's sale at £240 for Messrs Gray, Langside, Lanark, and to 550p per kg for Messrs Morgan, Bridge Farm, Hereford.

Cast sheep (1024) sold to £250 for a Texel cross ewe from Buninver Road.

On the cattle front, bullocks sold to 316.5p for a Limousin cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake and to £2684.38 for a British Blue cross from Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall, Penrith.

Limousin crosses led the heifers at £2285.36 for Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle, and to 315.5p for Messrs Beattie, Woodfield, Annan.

Young bulls sold to £2554.50 and 327.5p for a British Blue from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan.

A British Blue cow from A Wight, Midlock, Biggar, realised 283.5p and £2378.


Lanark

On Monday, Lawrie and Symington sold heifers to 344p per kg and £2051.60 from Messrs Dickinson, Brockwoodlees, Canonbie.

Bullocks reached 268p from Gair, and to £1638 from Millhill.

Among the cast cows a top call of £2130 came from Messrs Warnock, Dreva, Biggar, and to 258.4p from Messrs Taylor, Heatheryhall, Lanark.

Hoggs (2692) averaged 380p and sold to 457p on two occasions, firstly for Beltex from Messrs Watson, High Tarbeg, Cumnock, and again for Texels from Messrs Warnock, Sandilands, Lanark.

Price per head reached £246 for a Texel from Parkin, Lower Daviesdykes, Wishaw.

Cast sheep sold to £282 for a Texel ewe from Messrs O’Connor, Woodside, Carstairs Junction.


Ayr

Limousin heifers led the way at Craig Wilson's prime sale, having reached 338p per kg for the Smith family, North Boig, and to £2194.50 for Messrs Andrew, Rowanston.

Heifers (14) averaged 306.56p, with bullocks peaking at 330p for a Limousin from North Boig.

Cast cattle sold to £1840 for a Charolais bull from Southridgehills.

Hoggs averaged 376.6p per kg and sold to 476p for Beltex from Messrs Stevenson, Balcaimie and to £221 for Texels from Messrs McFadzean, Broadshean.

Cast sheep peaked at £211 for Texel ewes from R and M Thomson, Kiers.


Dingwall

Dingwall and Highland Marts had forward 1500 sheep with 1045 old season lambs averaging 371.25p per kg.

A top call of 406p was paid for 46.5kg Charollais crosses from Dunearn, Nairn, and to £243 for a 64kg Texel from Wester Raddery, Fortrose.

A Texel ewe from Druid Temple, Inverness, led the cast sheep at £240.


Kirkby Stephen

An entry of 3834 sheep was forward at Harrison and Hetherington's sale, where 3423 hoggs averaged 406.29p per kg.

Beltex led the trade at £252 for a 52kg entry from Messrs Burton, Little Westfield, Driffield, and to 631.6p for a pen of 38kg from J Andrews, Boscar Flats, York.

Cast sheep peaked at £192 for Beltex cross ewes from Messrs Slater, Whitely Hey, Macclesfield.
