TRADE peaked at 3800gns at the annual Holstein bull sale hosted on behalf of the Border and Lakeland Club at Carlisle, on Monday, where averages fell by almost £400 on the year but for five more sold and with a respectable clearance of 83%.
Sale leader was the champion Friesian, Raby Jason, from Sam Howarth, of The Hollies, Pickering, in North Yorkshire, who runs 400 cows in his all-organic Leasbeck herd.
Bought as a yearling from the Raby herd’s dispersal near to Wirral, he is bred from a long line of high component, long living females and is out of Raby Jasmine 52 BFV87, which gave 7201kg during her ninth lactation at 4.16% BF and 3.24% P.
Her great grand-dam Raby Jasmine 42 BFG76 produced in excess of 6600 litres in her 11th at 4.30%BF and 3.58%P.
This 21-month-old, which is a son of Blackisle Garve and a full sister to this year’s grand champion at the Livestock Event, Raby Jasmine 59 Ex94-2E, sold to John Drummond, Townhead, Kilmarnock.
Three bulls sold for 3600gns with the first, Nerewater Launch Topic, being another Friesian, from Richard Bell’s herd from Wigton.
This similarly aged bull is out of the BFE90-3E classified cow, Nerewater Torchie 3, which produced 8690kg in her seventh lactation at 5.02%BF and 3.45%P. By the well-known sire, Nerewater Launcher, which has bred six Excellent and 12 VG daughters, with semen sold to both Ireland and France, was knocked down to another Ayrshire producer, A Hunter, Laigh Lancraig, Kilmarnock
Ken Brough of the Chapelhouse herd in Uldlae, Wigton, also achieved 3600gns when he sold Chapelhouse Glow to J Pollock from Bonnyhill, Bonnybridge.
His 19-month-old which is out of Mayne Larkson Gloriette Ex90 LP60, gave 7809kg in her seventh lactation at 4.37%BF and 3.48%P, and is sired by VA-Early-Dawn Sudan CRI.
The last of the 3600gns bids came for the reserve Holstein champion, Warnelview Vito, a 14-month-old bull from Kevin and Christine Wilson’s Warnelview herd at Thursby, Carlisle, purchased by Robert Baxter, for his 200-cow herd based at Gibblaston Farm, Bridge of Weir, Renfrewshire.
This Regancrest Altaiota son is out of Warnelview Fever Violet 2 VG87-3yr SP, which produced more than 10,000kg in her second lactation at 5.03 % BF.
The Wilsons also received 3300gns for Warnelview Interval. This yearling is by Cogent Supershot and bred from the Ex90 SP cow, Warnelview Winners Flo. He headed north with Duncan Titch, Drydlae, Kinbister, in Orkney.
Bulls from Matthew Armour’s Annandale herd from The Milton, Moffat, also made the grade with two at 3500gns and another at 3400gns. First to hit 3500gns was Annandale Leinster, a rising two-year-old which stood third in its class at the pre-sale show.
An Askew Reece son, he is bred from the VG87 Annandale Binocular Leeza which traces back to the Ex90 Den Dogge Leeza cow. The buyer was A Richardson, Low Bank End Farm, Appleby-In-Westmorland.
Matching that bid was the 19-month-old Annandale Frankfurt, bred from four generations of Ex cows being out of the Ex90 Annandale Binocular Farrah 2.
Sired by Seagull-Bay Supersire, he was knocked down to Northern Ireland producer, S Wilson, Deerfin Road, Ballymena, Co Antrim.
Dunbartonshire producer, Willie Turner from Dalmoak, then forked out 3400gns for another from Mr Armour, Annandale Kibble, another rising two-year-old this time by Annandale Marginal.
Another bred from a long line of VG and Ex dams, he is a grand-son of the Ex92-2E Annandale Outside Kimberley, being bred from the VG85 cow, Annandale Black G Kimberley, that produced almost 12,000kg in her first.
