SCOTTISH breeders enjoyed a buoyant trade at the Hereford Society’s autumn show and sale in Hereford, last week, where bulls and females both peaked at 5200gns.
Fife breeders, JM Cant and Partners, who run the Panmure herd at Arbroath, not only secured the reserve senior male honours with the 18-month-old Panmure 1 Mumford, but also the lead bull price of 5200gns. Selling back to Scotland with John Torrance and Sons, Knowetop Herefords, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, this cracker is by Panmure 1 Karl.
Another from the same home in the shape of Panmure 1 Monster, which earlier scooped the reserve grand male title, realised 4800gns to JE, RI and W Haire, Dorepoll Herefords, Co Antrim, Northern Ireland.
Panmure was again to the fore amongst the show heifers, selling the 20-month-old maiden, Panmure 1 Plum M6 for 3600gns to PD and JM Vaughan, Kingsland Herefords, Leominster. She’s by Hawkesbury 1 Volcano.
And, Panmure 1 Blessing M7, by Panmure 1 Kingsman, realised 2800gns to FC Jones, Upper House Herefords, Kington, Herefordshire.
Fellow Scottish breeders, Robert Wilson and his father, Ron, who run the Romany herd at Cowbog, Kelso, also enjoyed a good day, taking 2600gns for their yearling heifer, Romany 1 Julia H12 N11, by Romany 1 Heavyduty A84 H12. Local breeders, GE and SE Jackson, Marshland Herefords, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, were the last men in.
Also making 2600gns was the 18-month-old, Romany 1 Mink ST M68, by Spurstow 1 Star Bright Future, purchased by PR and RJ Lewis, Cerrig Herefords, Corwen, North Wales.
Just behind, on 2500gns, the yearling heifer, Romany 1 Ishbel K956 N26, also by Star Bright Future, was knocked down to SE Coar, Hereford.
Leading the heifer trade at 5200gns was the overall female champion, Dendor 1 Anna Mary 26, from DE, ED and AL Jones, Newtown, Powys, which sold to AG Whittle, Heywood, Lancashire.
This 25-month-old heifer is by the newly crowned UK sire of the year, Solpoll 1 Gilbert, and sold in calf to the Danish bull, SMH Euro 30E.
Dendor females were well sought after, with the 23-month-old, Dendor 1 Lily 19, by SMH Euro 30E and in calf to the Canadian sire, Harvie Jarva 52J, making 3600gns to PD and JM Vaughan, Kingsland.
Just behind, the 25-month-old, Dendor 1 Greta 19, also due to Harvie Jarva and a maternal sister to the show’s overall male champion, Dendor 1 Napoleon, by Dendor 1 Kalgoorlie, made 3500gns to RJ Windsor, Nantwich, Cheshire.
Dendor Herefords also took the overall male championship with their junior champion, Dendor 1 Napoleon, a 13-month-old son of Gilbert, which later made 5000gns to fellow pedigree breeders, Jonathan and Rosemary Moorhouse, Cato Herefords, Taunton, Somerset.
Regular sale females peaked at 2000gns for Kinglee 1 Oyster Girl 495, from P Cobley, Stoney Stanton, Leicestershire, purchased by R and RI Shaw, Hallwood Herefords, South Wirral, Cheshire.
