A JUNIOR cow bred from 10 generations of Excellent-classified females from Matthew and Ruth Harper, West House Farm, Maryport, attracted the lead price of 4800gns at the Border and Lakeland Club show and sale at Carlisle.

The sale, which included the dispersal of the High Three Mark herd from Stranraer, saw no fewer than 349 head sell to average £1725, with the overall champion, Lamroda Guthrie Elegant ET, topping the trade.

First prize senior heifer in the Border and Lakeland herd competition in 2015 and the dam of a 3500gns calf at last year's Black and white sale, Guthrie Elegant is a full sister to several high four-figure priced females including the 7300gns Lillyhall Shottle Elegant 2, VG87. Sired by Fustead Goldwyn Guthrie and out of the Ex91 Speek-NJ Shtl Numero Uno ET, she calved mid October and sold to join the Carldanton herd of Anthony Grimshaw, Bolton, Lancashire.

The reserve champion, selected by the judge, George Borland, Ayrshire, sold next at 2000gns to AST and A Shiels, Little Auchengibbert, Logan, Cumnock. This was Espland Uno Alison, an October calved heifer by Amighetti Numero Uno, from DI and AA Cannon, Appleby. Her dam, Espland Knowledge Alison, gave just shy of 11,000litres in her second.

Also heading north to Ayrshire at 1950gns, when purchased by A Lindsay, Cronan, Newmilns, was Futureproof Palermo Rosemarie, a Glenn-Ann Palermo-sired heifer in milk from new consignors, A and JE Smith, Healey Home, Riding Mill, Northumberland.

Just behind, on 1900gns, Keirmains Goldmine Violet, a calved heifer by Hydaways Goldmine, from M Young and Sons, Beuchan, Keir, Thornhill, was knocked down to JT and M Crowther, West Trailtrow, Lockerbie.

The dispersal sale of the Brown family's Friesian herd from High Three Mark, peaked at £1800 for a second calved cow giving almost 40kg, purchased by M Dickinson Kirkbarrow Hall, Penrith.

At £1700 was a freshly calved milking heifers, giving 32kg, which sold to the Shiels Family, Little Auchengibbert Farm, Ayrshire.
