AN improved show coupled with growing demand for the Simmental to produce replacement females, not only ensured a buoyant trade throughout but also higher averages in the majority of sections at a breed sale at Carlisle.
It was good day for Morayshire breeders, Jimmy and Iain Green, Corksie, Fochabers, too, when they not only sold the lead priced bull at 5600gns but also the third highest at 4800gns.
The family, who had just two bulls entered, topped the trade with Corskie Glacier, an October 2015-born son of the former Highland Show champion, Dirnanean Bradley, a stockbull which has bred bulls to a top of 13,000gns with his first 10 averaging in excess of £8300.

This rising two-year-old is a son of the 5500gns stockbull Blackford Albatross – a bull that has also bred numerous high priced sons – out of Newbiemains Blitz, a Kilbride Farm Rainman daughter which classified Ex91 in the breed's new female classification system, while her dam, Monaduff Rosebud, the imported foundation cow, also scored Ex91. Glitz goes out to work at Hoselaw Farm, Kelso, having been purchased by N and A and M and S Trotter.
The champion from Charles Clarke's herd from Model Farm, Brick Kiln Road, Norwich, realised 4600gns to Andrew Walters, manager at Boddington Estates along with stockman, Jimmy McMillan, The Manor, Boddington, Cheltenham. This 22-month-old  brought out by Ritch and Ashley McInness, is by Horsfordmanor Bonus, a bull bought privately which bred the lead priced bull at Newark, and out of a home-bred cow by Strathisla Popeye.

The Scottish Farmer:

Male champion, Burghbridge Gabriel

Also heading down to Cheltenham with a 4100gns price tag was Thomas Hill and Ruby Wright's second prize, Scotland Hill Goodie 15, from Mill Farm, Daw Lane, Wadworth, South Yorkshire. The breeding behind this transaction includes the Hockenhull Maverick son retained for breeding, Scotland Viper, onto a home-bred cow by Scotland Firebird. Broadfield Farms, Eastington, forked out the cash.
Top price amongst the Leading Ladies, was 3600gns paid for the third prize maiden heifer, Williams Snowqueen 8, from Andrew and Hayley Clarke, also of Model Farm, Norwich. This rising two-year-old maiden is by the privately purchased Heathbrow Tristar, a bull that boasts three inter-breed championships in 2011 and six breed titles, while the dam is the 10,000gns Hockenhull Snow Queen 35, a Popes Laird-sired cow bought at the Hockenhull dispersal.
