A PACKED ringside ensured a buoyant demand for Charolais bulls at a society show and sale at Welshpool, where no fewer than 11 bulls sold at 5000gns or more.
“The commercial traders were out in force looking to secure a bull which reflects the recent trend in the store markets where Charolais-sired suckler calves are topping the markets on weight for age,” said society chairman, Andrew Hornall.
Sale leader at 6400gns was the reserve champion, Brynffanigl Math, from Bob and Huw Roberts, Abergele, Clwyd. The youngest lot forward at just 13-months, he is by the 22,000gns Newhouse Bigal, and out of Brynffanigl Fion that goes back to the 17,000gns Alsnow Almighty. Math sold to local producer, Arthur Williams of DC Evans, who takes him back to work on the 120 strong suckler herd in Abergele, Clwyd.
Two realised 6000gns including the pre-sale champion – selected by Scottish judge, Ian Goldie – from Gareth Jones, Cwmtirmynach, Gwynedd. His December-2015 born Esgob Lionking is by Blelack Digger while his home-bred dam is by the 26,000gns Anside Excalibur. Purchasers were TWA Jenkins, Llandysul, Ceredigion.
Also making 6000gns was the 21-month-old Maerdy Llawes, from Flintshire vet, Esmor Evans, that was snapped up by DS Tudor, Corwen, Clwyd. The breeding here includes the 26,000gns sire, Maerdy Hearthrob with the dam being Maerdy Happiness, a daughter of the 13,000gns Highland Show junior champion, Kelton Trident.
Mr Evans also took 5300gns for his February-2016 born class winner, Maerdy Mastermind, by the French-born Maerdy Gouverneur. Final bidder was JR Jones, Caernarvon, Gwynedd.
Dan Harman, Chesham, Buckinghamshire, had a good day too selling two of the top priced lots both sired by the 12,000gns Wesley Equinox. Dearest at 5600gns was Silver Montecristo, a 14-month-old purchased by M Griffiths and Co, Pwllhelli, Gwynedd. Minutes earlier M Jones, Lledrod, Aberystwyth paid 5400gns for the 15-month-old, Silver Maximus.
