A BUOYANT demand for females saw trade peak at 7000gns for John and Sandra Middleton’s reserve supreme and female champion Hollywell Latin.

Latin, a 20-month-old daughter of Thrunton Fairfax and out of Hollywell Harmony, a former reserve junior champion at Balmoral, headed back to Ireland with H and H Heron of Newtonards, Co Down.

Just behind at 6800gns and selling to TP Atkinson, Ulverston, Cumbria, was Stephen Illingworth's Glenrock Jewel, a rising three-year-old by Dingle Hofmeister daughter, from Eaglesfield, Dumfries. She changed hands along with her nine-month-old heifer calf, Glenrock Melanie, by Goldies Eddy.

Mr Illingsworth enjoyed a great female sale with others at 4300gns and 4000gns. Dearest was Glenrock Harriet and her five-month-old heifer calf, Marriet, also by Eddy. Harriet, a five-year-old by Lowerffrydd Benhurr, and her calf, were knocked down to A and JJ Forrest, Biggar, Lanarkshire.

The six-year-old Glenrock Glamour, also by Benhurr, and her six-month-old daughter, Glenrock Mercedes, by Blelack Digger, made 4000gns to ER Pigs, Rotherham.

Matching that price tag was the reserve female champion, Alsnow Louise, from Alan Lawson, Hallington, Tyne and Wear. Welsh breeder, GM Roberts, Gaerwen, was the last man in on this 22-month-old daughter of Puntabrava Federico, whose dam Alsnow Harmony also goes back to Blelack Digger.

An added feature of the sale was a draft from the Thrunton herd of John and Ed Campbell, Alnwick, Northumberland, where 21 cows were sold with calves at foot. Top price here was 4000gns paid for the mother and daughter pair Thrunton Goddess and Thrunton Majesty. Goddess is a December-2011 born daughter of the 26,000gns Balmyle Dickler, while her 10-month-old daughter, Majesty, is by the 26,000gns Maerdy Hearthrob. The pair head up to Canonbie, Dumfriesshire with Tom Story.

Two Thrunton pairings made 3200gns with the first selling to J Charlton of Dudley, Northumberland, who bought Thrunton Dewdrop, a nine-year-old cow by Burradon Talisman and her two 10-month-old daughters, Thrunton Missdaisy and Missmarple, by Thrunton Gladiator.

Also making 3200gns was the eight-year-old cow Thrunton Fallon, by Newhouse Bigal and her seven-month-old heifer calf Thrunton Maradona by Balmyle Dickler, purchased by A and JJ Forrest, Biggar, Lanarkshire.
