A LARGE crowd gathered at Mead Farm, Chippenham, for the recent dispersal of Jeremy Fox and family’s Abbeymead Holstein herd, where there were 38 active buyers bidding to a top of 3300gns.
Setting that price was one of the much fancied milkers in the shape of Abbeymead Dude Gladys, which achieved the maximum classification of VG89 as a second calver.
This 2013-born Gibbs-I Claynook Dude daughter which gave 9462kg in her heifer lactation, is bred from a former show cow in the shape of the 10,344kg Abbeymead Gladys VG86. She sold to Kevin George for that top price giving 43kg having calved 170 days previously, and due to calve again to Bru-Dale Snowden in November.
Following on at 2100gns when knocked down to Jeff Jones for his Larchwood herd near Magor, Gwent, was Abbeymead Seagual Pamela VG85-2yr.
Another four-year-old and bred from 10 generations of cow in the top two classifications, she calved her second last August, was still yielding 28.5kg and was due again in September.
Her daughter, Abbeymead Doorman Pamela, a served heifer, then sold to Paul Gregor for his Boxbrook herd near Corsham, for 2000gns.
Also making 2000gns was one of the first Mr Chassity Obs Carson daughters to be registered in the UK, Abbeymead Carson Babs 2 GP84-2yr, which was yielding 35kg.
She is due with her second late this year and sold to Richard Jenkins, who bought a total of 10 for his Dawesford herd near Kilgetty, Pembrokeshire.
Heifer calves met a strong trade and sold to 1520gns for the first calf on offer, Abbeymead Solomon Meg 2, which sold to the Russell family of the Churchstar herd, Brinkworth.
The sale of machinery earlier in the day peaked at £14,900 for a 2004-registered Massey Ferguson 4365 tractor with loader, while a 2011 RS Evolution diet feeder sold for £4300.
