Carlisle
PRICES exceeded expectation at Harrison and Hetherington’s sale of 371 store cattle, where a Limousin cross heifer from S Wilson, Butchers, Corby Hill, topped at £1540.
This was followed at £1360 for another from Messrs Mounsey, Wardhall Guards, while bullocks sold to £1370 for an Aberdeen-Angus from JG Palmer, Longrigg Thorn, and £1320 for a pair of Limousin crosses from Messrs Barnes, Hutton Roof.
Dairy beasts reached £1045 for a pen of four from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm.
Dry weather meant fewer buyers and a lesser demand for the 318 weaned cattle forward. They reached £1300 for a pure Limousin bull from Corby Hill, with bullocks to £1080 for a Limousin from EL, W and CA Johnston, Horesmorehill, and heifers to £1065 for a Blonde from Messrs Weir, High Lodore.
On Monday, the firm sold 475 breeding sheep which met a good trade to top at £110 per head for a pen of 10 Texel cross hoggs with singles from Messrs Browell, Quarry House.
The same home also achieved £312 a unit, or £104 per head, for a pen of 10 Texel cross gimmers with twins at foot.

LEADING the pence per kg section and United Auctions’ recent sale of 646 store cattle were Charolais crosses from Berryhill, as a 171kg bullock realised 374.3p per kg and a heifer weighing 154kg sold for 311.7p.
Topping the gross trade at £1450 was a Limousin cross heifer weighing 537kg from Nether Dalkeith, with bullocks to £1390 for a 600kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from New Carden.
Friesian crosses led the dairy entry at 187.9p from Kirkland and £870 from Stewarton, while Charolais crosses led the young bulls at 275.3p from The Ross and £1140 from Midlock.
Averages included 327 bullocks at 234.34p, 261 heifers at 231.5p, 34 dairy bullocks at 176.16p, and 20 young bulls at 210.19p.
The 176 cast cows hit a top of 187.9p for a Charolais cross from Lathangie and £1390 for a Limousin cross from White House. They levelled at 141.12p, while 21 dairy cows averaged 122.76p and peaked at 136p from Meikle Camoquhill and £1070 from Houston.

CHAROLAIS cattle headed up the gross trade at Craig Wilson’s sale of 305 store cattle, when a bullock from Langholm sold for £1460 and a heifer from Broadhead realised £1425.
Leading the pence per kg at 283.6p was a pen of Aberdeen-Angus bullocks from Toward Point, with heifers to 266.1p for a pen of seven Limousins from Raith.
The 165 bullocks sold to average £918.65 or 236.8p, with 109 heifers at £884.57 or 229.6p.
Dairy-bred bullocks averaged £819.19 or 161p, having reached £930 from Crooks and 193.5p from Jameston.
Also forward were 233 ewes with lambs which met a sharper trade throughout. A pen of Suffolk ewes with Beltex-sired twins from Messrs Bothwell, Smithston, topped at £190 per outfit.

A GOOD show of store cattle met improved averages on the week as 223 bullocks levelled at 243p per kg (+3.6p on the week) while 273 heifers cashed in to average 235p (+5.3p).
A Simmental cross heifer weighing 398kg from Culquhassen, Glenluce, topped at 304p with heifers also reaching £1360 for a 582kg Limousin from Home Farm, Aberlour.
A pen of five Charolais crosses weighing 260kg from Pittenkerrie, Glassel, led the bullocks at 300p and a Charolais cross weighing 764kg from North Crannoch, Crossroads, topped the gross trade at £1460.
Young bulls (15) sold to 266.7p for a 240kg Simmental cross from Mill of Clinter, Finzean, and £1190 for a 702kg Beef Shorthorn from Wrangham, Colpy.
Of the cattle from the Orkney and Shetland islands, a pair of 340kg Charolais bullocks from Trondheim, Rendall, topped at 270.5p with another of the same weighing 674kg from Lower House, Hillwell, at £1240.
Heifers reached 259p for a pair of 278kg Limousins from A and K Sinclair, Firva, and £1025 for a pair of 476kg Aberdeen-Angus heifers from Workwell, Orphir.
In the sheep ring, Mule hoggs with lambs at foot met a strong demand and topped the 902-strong entry of breeding sheep at £100 for hoggs with singles from Bogiebrae, Rhynie.
Charollais from Tillychelty Cottages, Alford, topped the 120 store lambs at £129.50, and Texel rams from Meadow Park, Kirkwall, led the 871 feeding sheep at £125.

ALL classes met a firm trade with a large turnout of buyers present from throughout the country when United Auctions sold 226 cattle and 856 sheep.
Among the store cattle, Limousin crosses from Garraron and Melfort Farms topped the pence per kg at 324p for bullocks and 295p for heifers.
Hereford crosses from Clachan, Tiree, led the gross trade at £1110 six times for heifers and £1080 for bullocks, and Salers cross heifers from East Hynish, Tiree, also realised £1100.
Overall, bullocks levelled at 266p with heifers at 248p.
Breeding cattle sold to £2100 for a heifer with heifer calf from Barguillean, and cast cows peaked at £1100 from Achnacone.
In the sheep section, ewes with lamb at foot sold to £152 four times – for Texel crosses and Cheviot crosses with twins from Strathorchy, and again for Cheviot crosses with twins from both Dunnans and Ellary Estate.
Cross hoggs from Glenbeg hit £82 and Texel cross cast ewes from Brae Road, Ardrishaig, fetched £98.

DARLINGTON Farmers’ Mart recently sold 407 cattle and 319 sheep, where store cattle peaked at £1340 for a two-year-old Limousin bullock from JS Foster and Son, West End, Bowes.
Heifers reached £1285 for a trio of similarly-aged Aberdeen-Angus from JT Parkin, Shepherds Lodge, Marwood, and young bulls peaked at £1055 for a 13-month-old Charolais from MJ Hutchinson, Red Gap, Wolviston.
A large show of cast cattle saw cows peak at 193p per kg and £1405 for a British Blue from MW Barker and Son, Ketton Hall, with a Blue bull from AS and SM Kemp, Whitwell, Sherburn, also making 193p as well as £1627.
Breeding sheep peaked at £178 for a pair of Mule ewes with Texel-sired twins at foot from G Williamson, Bentley Close, Copley.
On Tuesday, the firm held a sale of breeding cattle where 22 heifers with calves cashed in to average £1570, having peaked at £2550 for a Limousin heifer with three-month-old heifer calf at foot from S and A Greave, Standing Stones, Eggleston.
Close behind on £2520 was the dearest from BA and C Pearson’s dispersal from Stainsby Hill, Thornaby, in the shape of a Limousin cow with her third calf at foot, a four-month-old British Blue cross. The 66 cows with calves levelled at £1492.

Here, the 31 bullocks averaged 259.2p per kg and sold to a top of 303.6p for six Simmental crosses weighing 247kg from West Brims, Forss, as well as £1160 twice for two lots of Charolais crosses weighing 447kg and 386kg from West End Farm, John o’ Groats.
Heifers (also 31) levelled at 251p and were topped by Charolais crosses from West End at 292.7p for one weighing 328kg and £1120 for another at 500kg.
A Simmental cross heifer with her Limousin-sired stot calf at foot from Cairnside, 36 Oldhall, Watten, topped the 10 breeding cattle at £2600.
In the sheep section it was Shetland ewes with twins from Lingland, Occumster (Sutherland), that topped the 65 breeding sheep at £145, and the 18 store lambs hit £76 for continentals from Old Inn, Roadside, Forse.
The six prime lambs on offer reached 218.6p per kg for a 43kg Texel and £102 for a 52kg Suffolk cross, both from Brae-edge, Castletown, and the 55 prime hoggs sold to 191.3p and £88 for a trio of 46kg continentals from Rattar Mains, Scarfskerry.
Feeding ewes and rams (112) hit £100 for Suffolks from Murza Farm, Bower.

Cockermouth
STORE cattle kept up with recent rates at Mitchells Livestock Auctioneers’ recent sale of 167 store cattle, which peaked at £1215 for a British Blue cross bullock from Messrs Greening, Waverbank.
Heifers reached £1165 twice for Limousins from Whins Farm, and young bulls sold to £1205 for Limousins from Oxenriggs.
The second sale of breeding cattle from RI and M Woodall, Row End, saw strong units easily sold with a top of £1780 paid for a Limousin cow and bull calf.
A small show of ewes with lambs also met a strong trade, and peaked at £79 per life for Texels with lambs from Greenbank Close.

A CATALOGUED entry of 240 store cattle met a good trade at Penrith and District Farmers’ Mart on Monday, where a run of heifers from Dennis Bowman, Croft House, topped the sale at £1485 for a Limousin.
Averaging above the £1000 mark, bullocks sold to £1295 for a British Blue from DW and TA Bell, High Dyke, and young bulls hit £1075 for a Limousin from JB Holliday and Sons, Town Head.

Castle Douglas
EWE hoggs were shown in good bloom following a good spring, which reflected in the trade as prices were well up on the year at Wallets Marts’ opening sale of breeding sheep on Monday.
The 784 Blackfaces forward peaked at £182 for a pen from JW Kay and Co, Gass, Straiton, selling to Brian Mullen, Co Derry. This was followed at £178 for a pen from Glen Farming Co which also heads across the water this time with Seamus Maginn, Downpatrick, and the sale averaged £132.81, a rise of £28.66 on the year.
Scotch Mule hoggs hit a top of £129 for a pen from Mr Jameson, Garrochtrie, which sold to Messrs Fergusson, East Side, Durisdeer. The 328 Mules levelled at £107.26.
