Buyers were impressed with the quality forward for the July Border and Lakeland Club show and sale of Holstein cattle, at Carlisle, which was staged alongside the sixth annual sale of youngstock from the Lismulligan Friesian and Dairy Shorthorn heifers.

Heifers in milk forward for the Club sale, attracted most of the attention with the 2650gns sale leader being Boclair BG Echo 8, a fresh heifer from Jack and David Brewster's Boclair herd from Bearsden, Glasgow, purchased by J and J Kinloch, Walton Farm, Cardross, Dumbarton. Reserve champion at the pre-sale show, this Boclair Goldwyn daughter bred from five generations of VG or Ex classified cows, is out Boclair Matson Echo VG88.

The Armour family's Annandale herd from The Milton, Moffat sold 10 heifers to average £1851 with a top price of 2500gns paid for Annandale Supersire Lausan sired by Seagull-Bay Supersire. Bred from the Comestar Laurie Sheik cow family and giving close to 40kg, she was purchased by JL Bailie, Ballynahnch, Northern Ireland who also purchased Holmland Commander Ailsa consigned by Stephen and Patricia Bell, Penrith, at 2400gns.

Ailsa is by Larcrest Commander, while her 4th dam is the popular bull dam from Quebec, Canada Viexsaule Allen Dragonfly Ex94.

Just behind, on 2300gns, John Rae, Boghead, Collin, Dumfries, bought Skirwith Hall Farms' Stowbeck Saxman Madge, from Penrith. This fresh 22-month-old heifer giving 35.5kg, is by Townhouse Saxman and bred from a GP82 SP dam.

Allan Cannon's Espland Jordan Amy 3, from Espland Farm, Appleby, made 2250gns. She is by Gillette Jordan, bred from the Ex90 Espland Shottle Amy, and was knocked down to Allan McCamley, Knockshiffnock Farm, Ochiltree, Cumnock, Ayrshire

Mr Cannon also produced the champion in Espland Meridian Mavis, by Sully Hard Meridian. She made 2200gns selling to the judge, Colin Dent of the Bridge End herd from Kirkby Thore, Penrith.

The Lismulligan sale from Basil and Adam Lawson, Fife-based herd featured 40, 2016-born heifer calves and saw trade topped at 1450gns.

A large percentage of these well-bred calves were sired by Lismulligan Mufasa, which is a son of Lismulligan Myra 27 Ex95 8E LP100 and winner of the Genus Long Life Cow Competition in 2013. Topping the sale was a classy Collycroft Solo daughter bred from an Ex91 sister to Mufasa. She was purchased for 1450gns by JE Oulton, Domvilles Farm, Audley, Stoke on Trent

The same buyer also bought the second top priced at 1100gns. Lismulligan Shamrock 5 is by Mufasa and bred from six generations of Ex or VG cows from the Raby Shamrock cow family.
