A GOOD, quality entry of Holstein and British Friesian bulls from some of the best cow families, sold to a top of 5100gns and 5000gns, respectively, at a dairy show and sale at Carlisle
Add that no fewer than 14 bulls which sold at or above the £4000 bracket and overall averages up more than £500 on the year, and most breeders went home in a relatively confident mood.
Topping the trade at 5100gns was the Armour family’s Annandale Farish, from The Milton, Moffat, which was purchased by AD and A Richardson, Low Bank End, Appleby-in-Westmorland. Bred from four successive generations of Ex-classified cows going back to the Ex92 SP LP50 Granchester Charles Farrah cow, this 17-month-old is out of Annandale Binocular Farrah 2 Ex90 which gave just shy of 14,000 litres in her second at 5.07%BF and 3.67%P. The sire was Annandale Hector.
The Armours also received 4200gns for Annandale Rudolph, a similarly aged bull by Askew Reece. He is out of the VG87 cow, Annandale Gulliver Rhapsody, which boasts 12 Excellent-classified cows behind her, being a daughter of the Ex92 Llanbedr Gibson Rhapsody. He sold to Lanarkshire milk producers Willie Smith, Greentower Farms, Moor Road.
Also heading to Lanarkshire, TL Trainer, Byretown, Lanark, bought another Annandale bull at 4000gns in Annandale Minstral, a 21-month-old son of Annandale Marginal bred from Annandale Charlie Millie VG86.
Two Holstein bulls made 4800gns including the champion, Wormanby Galantis, consigned by the Hodgson family from Wormanby, Carlisle. A son of Crasdale Bankroll, bred from Wormanby Aftershock Gloriette Ex93 – a young cow that has been Nominated All Britain and is a fourth generation of Excellent dams all with massive lifetime yields – this 15-month-old was knocked down to Jim Kennedy, East Carngillan, Ayrshire.
The Wormanby herd sold five bulls from their prize winning herd to average almost £3500, with their next sale at 4000gns coming for Wormanby Lynden, a Silverridge V Wickham son out of the Ex93 SP cow, Wormanby Atwood Linda.
Also making 4800gns was Andrew Carter’s Gerrard Domino, a 15-month-old bull by R-E-V Seaver from Gerrard House, Wigton. His dam, Gerrard Spirte Doll 2 Ex92-2E LP50, just calved her fifth and is still going strong.
The buyer was A Meredith, North Trawthie, Strichen, who also went to 4300gns for Kevin and Christine Wilson’s Warnelview BSC Rocket ET, from Wood Farm, Thursby, Carlisle.
A maternal brother to several stock bulls to include the champion bull at the 2015 spring sale here which made 5800gns, this 16-month-old is bred from the Ex92-2E SP Warnelview Ruby Iota, is from four successive generations of Ex cows and sired by Ballycairn Supersire Corinthian.
The same stable also produced bulls at 4200gns and 4000gns. Dearest was Warnelview Evans, a yearling son of Allyndale-I Attic, purchased by Messrs Mallinson, Hallfield, Hesket Newmarket, Wigton. He is also backed by some high rated females being bred from the Ex91-2ESP LP70 cow, Warnelview Bambam Enid.
Warnelview Hunt, a similarly aged bull then made 4000gns selling to E Nixon, Ribton House, Camerton, Workington. Reserve champion at the pre-sale show, this youngster is also backed by some impressive milking females, with the dam being the Ex93-3E LP70 cow, Warnelview Final Cut Honey, while the sire was Lindenright Megawatt.
Leading the British Friesian trade at 5000gns was the reserve champion, Nerewater Launcher Pyhl, from Wigton breeders, RW and J Bell, Nerewater Farm. Sired by Nerewater Launcher, which has produced sons to 4000gns and 3600gns – this 17-month-old is out of an Ex91-classified dam by Marshside Roulette. The buyers were Messrs Noble and Sons, Sooty Hill, Penrith.
Nerewater also sold the second top priced Friesian, when Nerewater Marshall Tonic, a similarly aged bull by Lakemead Marshall, made 4700gns to Wynne Bros, Bryn-Y-Fran, Colwyn Bay, North Wales. His dam is Nerewater Torchie 4 Ex91-2E LP 80 which has bred five high priced bulls sold locally.
Scottish breeder Ian Brocket, Renfrewshire, also enjoyed a good day selling the next three top lots at 4000gns twice and 3500gns. Included in this trio was the pre-sale champion, Winnoch Halifax, a two-year-old son of Dechmont Igniter out of Winnoch Penguin 284. He headed west with DJ and RD Neil and Sons, Kirminnoch Farm, Stranraer.
Another by the same sire and bred from another home-bred Penguin made the same money selling to J Dickinson, High House, Southernby, Hesket New Market.
Winnoch Counsellor, onto Winnoch Flora 144 SP LP70, produced a 3500gns sale for Mr Brocket’s other two-year-old bull, Winnoch Harrison, which sold to Messrs Mattocks, Aulby Farm, Penrith
