Carlisle
QUALITY cattle were well sought after while any showing signs of the weather proved harder to cash at Harrison and Hetherington’s weekly sale of store cattle and calves, which attracted entries of 680 and 326, respectively.
Top price was £1335 paid for a Limousin cross bullock from Brian Strong, Grapes Barn, Wigton, with a Charolais from JJ Hall, Lankaber, Penrith, leading the heifer section at £1285.
One of the best shows of weaned calves saw 292 forward which sold to £1130 on two occasions. First was an 11-month-old Limousin bull from Messrs Swift, Dry How.
Messrs Bell, Newshield, also received £1130 for two Limousin cross heifers.

Thainstone
A USEFUL selection of breeding cattle was forward at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ sale at Thainstone which saw 46 head sell to a top of £2550 for a Charolais cross cow with bull calf at foot from Hindstones, New Aberdour.
The same also produced the lead priced bull at 3500gns.
Bulling heifers also sold well at the company’s sale of 53 certified BVD free heifers on the Friday where a top price of £1380 was achieved the reserve champion at the pre-sale show – judged by Paul Frank, Rainnieshill – Simmental crosses from Followsters, Newmill.
The champion, a 556kg Simmental cross from 65 Pennan Road, Ellon, realised £1280 to W and M Ewing, South Blachrie, Fyvie.
Top price per kg was 259.7p for a pair of 516kg Simmental crosses from12 Seafield Street, Cullen. Overall, the 53 head averaged 224.5p (-0.6p on the year).
Store cattle and sheep sold the same day saw 399 bullocks average 223p per kg having sold to 260.6p for a pair of 376kg Limousins from Mains of Elrick, Auchnagatt and £1515 for a 694kg Limousin from Lower Cushieston, Meikle Wartle.
The 318 store heifers levelled at 219.5p having peaked at 359.3p and £1940 for a pair of 540kg Limousins from Learney Home Farm, Torphins, and the five bulls which levelled at 199.6p hit a top of 221.6p and £1130 for a 510kg Limousin from Fodderletter, Tomintoul.
Orkney and Shetland cattle sold to 256.4p per kg for a 390kg Limousin bullock from M Delday, Quoybelloch, Deerness, and £1390 for a 608kg Aberdeen Angus from Balfour Estates, Balfour Castle, Shapinsay.
Quoybelloch also topped the heifers at 246.2p for a 398kg Limousin. Lead gross price was £1090 paid for a 484kg from J Sinclair, Appieteen, Sandwick.
Adding to a busy day, the sheep sale, saw a good trade for ewe lambs with store lambs up on the week.
The 1137 ewe lambs peaked at £130 for Mules from Mains of Glenbuchat, Strathdon, with the 2199 store lambs hitting a top of £73 for Beltex from Bogiefeulach, Tornaveen.
Island lambs (2898) peaked at £79 for Texels from Glenisla, Gulberwick, with older sheep selling to £76 for Texel ewes from the same home.

BULLOCKS averaged 215.80p and heifers cashed in at 211.01p per kg at United Auctions’ sale of 1523 store cattle which included native bred and young bulls and 155 cast cows at Stirling.
The 664 bullocks sold to a top of 270.80p for a 288kg Limousin cross from Berryhill and £1270 for a 537kg Limousin cross from Towncroft.
Heifers (577) were led by a 272.20p bid for a 395kg British Blue from Common, or £1250 for a 582kg Limousin cross from Compestonend.
Black and white bullocks (154) averaged 150.79p having sold to 193.70p and £1100, for a 568kg Holstein cross from Temples.
Drumcruilton topped the entry of 68 young bulls with a Limousin cross at 251.30p and £1045 for a Angus cross Limousin, with the section averaging 232.25p.
An Angus cross topped the pence per kg section amongst the 141 cast cows selling at 196.10p with a Charolais cross from Gilmeadowland leading the gross trade at £1630. The overall beef cow average was 135.15p.
Dairy cows (13) averaged 107.37p having sold to 136.50p for a Holstein Friesian from High Branchal and £1070 for the same from Carneil.
A small entry of breeding cattle saw an Aberdeen-Angus in calf to Angus from Genoch Mains top the section at £1880.
Store averages at Monday’s sale of 7332 lambs and feeding sheep slipped in all sections with Beltex dropping the most to level at £56.32 (-5.83p on the week); Texel crosses at £54.59 (-2.61p); Mules, £52.27 (-0.11p); Suffolk crosses, £58.54 (-1.43p); Cheviots at £48.07 (-5.01p) and Blackface lambs levelled at £40.65 (-1.15p).

A GOOD turnout of mainland buyers were present for United Auctions’ second sale of lambs which included cast ewes and breeding stock and the annual cattle sale.
All classes of sheep met a good demand with exception to the breeding stock where purchasers were more selective. Cattle also met a hesitant demand as many of the entries were showing effects of the continuous wet weather.

Stirling (Cale)
SOME 383 store cattle, 28 breeding cattle and 3641 store lambs and feeding ewes, were forward for Caledonian Marts’ sale at Stirling on Monday, where bullocks averaged 211p per kg and heifers levelled at 195p.
Top price amongst the bullocks was 247p paid for a Simmental from C Sangster, Glenburn, Torwood, and £1300 for an Aberdeen-Angus from Messrs McFarlane, Addiewell, West Calder.
Heifers peaked at 215p and £1190, for a Limousin from Girnal, Stirling.
Black and white bullocks averaged 142p having sold to 152p from C and C Crawford, Crooklands, Haywood, and £780 from W Baxter, Gryfeside, Kilmacolm.
All classes of store lambs were easier on the week by £4-£5 per head.
Top price was £69 paid for Beltex crosses from RM and CM Squair, Lower Killernie.
Ewes sold to £50 for a pen of Mules from J M Ingleby, Malling.

AN entry of 8073 store lambs and feeding ewes for C and D Auction Marts’ sale at Longtown, ensured a full ringside of buyers where trade for all classes of strong lambs met a similar trade, while small hill lambs were cheaper on the week.
Top price was £72 paid for Suffolk lambs from Dunshiel, Elsdon.
