Lanark
A BRITISH Blue bullock from Messrs McGarva, Nether Abington, claimed the championship at a show and sale of 1705 suckled calves at Lawrie and Symington’s sale, but it was a Blue heifer from the same home that topped the trade at £1740 and 320p per kg. 
The champion went on to sell for £1570 or 262p, while the reserve champion, a Limousin heifer from Messrs Orr, Lawhead, made £1460 or 303p. 
Overall, bullocks levelled at 225p with heifers at 221p.

Dingwall
THE entire entry of spring and early summer-born calves met satisfactory rates at Dingwall and Highland Marts’ sale of 496 weaned calves. 
Charolais crosses from A and D Renwick, Keppoch, topped the entry at 320.9p per kg for a pen of eight bullocks weighing 134kg, with a pen of nine heifers weighing 142kg making 309.9p and a pen of 370kg heifers at £810. 
Per head, a top of £1000 was paid for a 475kg Aberdeen-Angus cross bullock from DM MacDonald, Aird, 5 North Duntulm, Portree. Overall, bullocks (267) averaged 246.8p with heifers (226) at 232.2p. 
Taking the championship at the pre-sale show was an eight-month-old Limousin cross bullock from A MacLean, 4 Bualnaluib, Aultbea, which weighed in at 305kg and sold for £800. The reserve, a similarly-aged 315kg Limmy cross bullock from I Grant, Slattadale, Lochmaree, realised £900.

Thainstone
AN ‘excellent’ show of weaned calves was forward at Aberdeen and Northern Marts, where the champion from the pre-sale show went on to top the sale. 
That was a 10-month-old Limousin cross bullock from Messrs Macarthur, Mid Fleenas, which went on to sell to Blair Duffton, Huntly, for £1950 or 407.7p per kg at a weight of 478kg. 
The reserve, a 402kg nine-month-old Limousin cross heifer from Stephen Duncan, Achdregnie, sold to the judge, Gordon Troup, Shaggart, for £1450 or 360.6p. 
Overall, weaned calf averages improved on the year when 335 bullocks averaged 237p (+5.8p) with 234 heifers at 233.9p (+11.2p). Outwith the show, trade was topped at £1480 and 317.6p for a 466kg Limmy cross heifer from Achdregnie, with bullocks to £1240 for a 528kg Charolais cross from Rorandle, Monymusk, and 299.1p for a 284kg Limousin cross from Meikle Maldron, Torphins.

Longtown
HEADING up a show and sale of 634 suckled calves at C and D Auction Marts’ Longtown centre at the weekend, where the top-end was dear and better than expected, was a Limousin bullock from WH and DA Gass, Nunscleugh. 
The stot later sold for the top price of £1340 to Smith Bros, The View. 
In reserve was a British Blue bullock from Alex A Roskell and Partners, Laverhay, which sold to the judge, David Dickinson, Brockwoodlees, for £1190. 
Lead Charolais at £1240 was a bullock from WG and HM Kyle, Spoutbank. 
The sale levelled at £993.53 and the dearest heifer at £1260 was a Limousin from TN Story, Hilltop.

Portree 
DINGWALL and Highland Marts sold 100 weaned calves and store cattle on Monday, where 53 bullocks cashed in to average 210.5p per kg and 47 heifers levelled at 195.5p. 
Bullocks sold to 255.6p for a 180kg Simmental cross from 2 Brogaig, Portree, and £800 for a Limousin cross weighing 350kg from 2 Sartle, Portree.
Topping the heifers at 242.6p was a pair of 235kg Aberdeen-Angus crosses from 4 Bay, Waternish, and at £920 was a Charolais cross scaling 490kg from 15 Glenconnon, Uig.

Stirling (UA)
A CHAROLAIS cross heifer from Duncan Semple, Dippen, secured the overall championship before selling for the top price at United Auctions’ show and sale. 
The 378kg spring-born heifer went on to sell for 383.6p per kg or £1450. 
The reserve, picked out by T Miller, High Gameshill, was an autumn-born Limousin-sired bullock weighing 478kg from the Simpson family, Mains of Crechies, which sold for £1120. 
The 1039 bullocks levelled at 251.5p with the 744 heifers at 233.9p. Bullocks sold to 308p for a 276kg Limousin from Carslae as well as £1140 for a 500kg Limousin cross from Chesthill Farms and Fullarton.

Castle Douglas
JUDGING a show and sale of spring-born suckled calves at Wallets Marts was Jock MacTaggart, Bridge of Dee, who bought the champion for the top price of £1210 and 340.8p per kg. 
That was a 355kg Charolais bullock from R Jardine and Son, Upper Hardland. 
The reserve, a Limousin heifer from Messrs Armstrong, Farhills, weighed 3264kg and sold to Mr Sanderson, Upper Senwick, for £880 or 333.3p to lead the heifer trade. 
With all classes keenly bid for, calves met the some of the dearest trade ever at Castle Douglas when 441 spring-born bullocks levelled at 260.62p per kg or £779.60 (+12.9p  or £63.17 on the year) with 237 heifers at 242.73p or £636.19 (+19.2p or £57.30). 
Outwith the show, bullocks peaked at £1110 or Limousins from Garrochtrie and 316.7p for a pen of seven Charolais crosses from Craignarget, while heifers reached £830 for Charolais crosses from Craignagret and Muncraig, as well as 284p for a pen of six Charolais from McNeill Estates, Shennanton.
