NO fewer than 1733 suckled calves were sold at United Auctions' annual show and sale on Monday, where judge Andrew Morton jnr, of Lochend, Denny, picked out a Limousin cross bullock as his champion.

Consigned by the Richardson family, Upper Samieston, it weighed in at 232kg and was knocked down for £980 or the top price per kg of 422.4p.

In reserve was a 366kg Charolais cross bullock from T Gray, West Park, which realised £970.

It was, however, a 405kg Simmental cross bullock from Ardtornish which led the gross trade while heifers peaked at 359.2p and £1020 for a 284kg Limousin cross from Cairncurran.

Overall, the 1099 bullocks averaged 263.36p with 634 heifers at 243.98p.

Also forward were 4075 store and breeding sheep, where Texels from Carroch led the store lambs at £68, and breeding sheep hit £88 for two-crop Mule ewes from Grange of Airlie.
