A small but quality offering of Charolais bulls and females forward for the breed society's final sale of the year at Carlisle, saw prices peak at 5500gns for the reserve overall champion from Yorkshire breeders, Mark and Jane Hayhurst, Kirbymisperton.

Their 18-month-old bull, Whitecliffe Mountain, is by the Blelack Digger son, Whitecliffe Highlight, a bull that has bred sons to 6200gns, and out of Whitecliffe Harriete, a Goldies Champion-sired cow. The buyers were G McClanachan and Sons, Gairloch, Torthorwald, Dumfriesshire.

Next at 5400gns, selling to PL Heard, Yelland, Okehampton, Devon, was the February 2016-born, yellow ticket holder, Bassett Magnet, from Jean Atkinson, Malton, North Yorkshire. He is by Bassett Inspector, a Harestone Domino-sired bull, and bred from Bassett Dolly by Thrunton Troubadore.

Following, at 5200gns, was the male champion and supreme overall, Glenbuck Mint ET from Robin and Damien O'Mullan, who travelled over from Clogher, Co Tyrone, with a film crew who have been filming the family for the up-coming TV show Rare Breed – A Farming Year, which will be aired on UTV and TV3 in Northern Ireland from January, and will also available on ITV player.

The bull, a 19-month-old son of the French sire, Major, is bred from the Doonally New daughter, Yambo Hanora and sold to Andrew Ewing, Dumbretton, Annan, Dumfriesshire.

Leading the females at 3800gns was the reserve female champion from Fred, June and Emma Andrews, Holmfirth, Yorkshire. Their winner was the September 2015-born Holtstead Lottie, by Balthayock Hamish and out Thrunton Debutante, which is a daughter of Gretnahouse Archangel. She was purchased in calf, by David Hazell, Bicester, Oxfordshire.

The same home also produced the second top priced lot at 3700gns for Holtstead Imagine, a rising five-year-old by Newhouse Bigal, out of a home-bred cow by Gretnahouse Noel. She changed hands with five-month-old heifer calf at foot by Goldies Eddy and served to Blelack Digger, to JR Germany, Great Hautbois, Coltishall, Norfolk.

Three draft sales of females were also staged to include David and Carol Noton's Ashby herd from Grimsby, Lincs; Alasdair Houston's Gretnahouse herd from Gretna Green and D Smith and Sons' Lawersbridge herd from Mauchline, where four of the top five lots sold down to Oxfordshire with David Hazell, Inkerman, Souldern, Bicester.

Dearest at 2500gns was David and Carol Noton's Ashby Lucy, a two-year-old heifer by Blelack Digger, bred from a home-bred cow by Clyth Diplomat. She sold in calf to MMB Apollon, to Mr Hazell, who also bought Alasdair Houston's June 2016-born Gretnahouse Mulona. Her breeding includes the 12,000gns Wesley Equinox onto a home-bred cow by Thrunton Camelot.

Top price for the Lawersbridge herd was 2200gns paid for the mother and daughter duo, Lawersbridge Hope and Lawersbridge Nettle. Hope is a five-year-old daughter of the herd sire Smithston Elite while her nine-month-old heifer calf is by Lawersbridge Iceberg. Both travel on to Balerno, Mid Lothian with purchasers, S and M Wardlaw and Sons, Haughhead.
