HEIFERS topped the pence per kilo trade at Lawrie and Symington's sale of 29 prime cattle last week, when a 575kg Limousin from Gask made 260p per kg. Averaging 234p, the 21 heifers also peaked at £1512 for a 600kg Limousin from West Bog.

The eight bullocks topped the gross section at £1633.50 for a 675kg Limousin from Nethermyres and to 246p three times firstly for a 605kg Aberdeen-Angus from Shandford; a 655kg Limousin from Nethermyres and a 525kg Limousin from Woodhead of Mailer. They levelled at 238p.

Also on offer was 518 prime hoggs which peaked at 220p for 50kg Beltex from Easter Balgillo and to £110 from Easter Balgillo, to average 195.2p (+8p), with 86 ewes and rams to £95 for Texels from the same home.

Huntly

A GOOD show of hoggs met a firm enquiry at United Auctions' sale of 1709, with well-fleshed export types regularly surpassing the £2 per kilo mark.

A top of 233p was paid for 39kg Beltex from Sheep Park, Bridge of Marnoch, and £106 for 53kg Charollais from North Retanach, Rothiemay.

Ewes (451) sold to £118 for Suffolks from South Blachrie, with rams to £120 for Texels from Belskavie.

Cockermouth

A LIMOUSIN bull from TA Byers, Ellenbank, topped Cockermouth's prime cattle sale last week, when it sold for 208.50p per kg and £1203.05.

With a decent show forward, 44 cast cows sold to 159.50p and £1250.48 for a Limousin from Prospect House Farm, while OTM cattle topped at £964.80 for a bull from Watson Hill and 118.50p for a Holstein Friesian heifer from Threapland Lees.

The sale of 1347 prime hoggs saw the SQQ average increase by 2p on the week and reach a top of 266.70p for a pen of Beltex hoggs from JW and VI Naylor, Hillgreen and to £110 for Beltex hoggs from RP and VE Graham, Sherriff.

Thainstone

ABERDEEN and Northern Marts' sold 31 prime heifers to average 226.4p (+0.6p) and three prime bullocks at 212.7p last week.

Topping the trade at 245p was a 575kg Limousin heifer from Cairncoullie, Glenkindie, and £1467.30 for a 670kg Limousin heifer from the same home.

Bullocks peaked at 230p for a 540kg Limousin from Waterside of Forbes, Alford, and £1393 for a 700kg Charolais from Chapelford, Buckie.

The 207 beef cast cows averaged 143p (+2.9p) and sold to 190.7p for a 590kg Limousin from Wainsgate, Durris, and £1490 for a 935kg Limousin from Cottown, Drumblade.

Averaging 120.2p (-3p), eight bulls sold to 131.9p and £1570 for a 1190kg Limousin from Cottown, Drumblade, and for a 1235kg Charolais from Wellheads, Huntly.

In the sheep, 2281 prime hoggs met an excellent trade to average 201.5p (+8.1p) or £91.20 with 1308 SQQs at 205.5p (+8.3p). They reached 253.6p for 42kg Beltex from Hallhill, Kinneff, and £122 for 55kg Beltex from Guise, Tough.

Stirling (UA)

BELTEX from Kinloch topped United Auctions' sale of 4300 prime hoggs when they sold for £124 and 261p per kg, to average 192.8p.

The 1264 ewes and rams peaked at £140 for a Texel ewe from Dalchirla.

Stirling (Cal)

A POORER show for quality of prime cattle sold no cheaper on the week at Caledonian Marts' sale of 92 prime bullocks, heifers and young bulls, where bullocks averaged 212p per kg; heifers levelled at 221p and young bulls averaged 190p.

Bullocks topped at 250p and £1621 for a Limousin from Learielaw, Broxburn, while heifers led the gross per head at £1626 for a Limousin from Brockwoodlees, Canonbie. Heifers also peaked at 250p for a Limousin from Upper Spittalton, Thornhill.

Young bulls sold to 198p for a Limousin from Giffordland, Dalry, and £1694 from Cairnbog, Kilsyth.

Levelling at 132p, beef cast cows peaked at £1310 for a Limousin from A Kennedy and Sons, Seggarsdean, and 162.5p for a Charolais cross from D Reid, Middlerigg.

Dairy cows averaged 108p and peaked at £930 and 126.5p from J and GP McConnell, Hoodsyard, while cast bulls averaged 109p and reached £1280 for an Aberdeen-Angus from D Mair, Easter Langhill, and 116.5p for a Charolais from J and D Mitchell, Offers.

Also on offer was a strong show of 25 calves and stirks which sold to £440 twice for Charolais cross bullocks from R Epps, Ardnave, Islay.

Longtown

A GOOD entry of 4591 prime hoggs made the dearest trade of the season yet, averaging 203.1p per kg with SQQs at 203.8p.

The sale topped at 288p for a pen of Beltex from A and A Little, Hollands, Penton, and for two pens of Texels from Muircleugh Partners, Lauder, who also produced the leading gross per head at £146 and £144.

Among the 5098 cast ewes and rams, all classes sold similar on the week, reaching £156 for Texel ewes from Muircleugh Partners, while hill ewes sold to £71 for a pen of Blackfaces from Messrs Forster, West Nubbock, Hexham.

Texels tups from Muircleugh Partners also topped the rams at £120.

Cast cows were keenly bid for with beef types selling dearer on the week. Top price was 139p per kg for Simmentals from TJC Bradbury, Satchells,
