Stirling Bull Sales: Flying trade for Charolais bulls with a 46,000gns top

Balthayock also received 19,000gns for Balthayock Manifesto  

The reserve senior champion, Balthayock Mandate, by the 20,000gns Maerdy Grenadier, a bull which is a former Highland Show male champion and sired this year’s female champion, made 16,000gns when sold to HR and C Dalrymple, Crailloch, Ballantrae, Girvan. This 21-month-old is bred from Balthayock Gold, another Swalesmoor Cracker-sired cow.
Next best for Balthayock at 14,000gns was their second bull through the ring, Balthayock Mikado, another by Balthayock Imp. This April, 2016-born bull, which produced a red ticket for the herd, is bred from the Swalesmoor Cracker daughter, Balthayock Heaven, which goes back to the famous Unwary dam of Balthayock Impression. He was snapped up by John Jeffrey, Kersknowe, Kelso.

And, at 10,000gns the Balthayock team sold their 20-month-old Balthayock Morgan. A son of the 8000gns Ugie Echo which is a former reserve junior champion at Stirling, Morgan is out of the Barbican-sired Balthayock Ira. Selling up to Orkney, he was bought by D Taylor, Hall of Herston, South Ronaldsay.

Father and son team, Neil and Stuart Barclay, also enjoyed a good day when nine bulls from their 70-cow Harestone herd averaged £9500, backed up by top prices of 18,000gns, 13,000gns and 12,000gns. 
Dearest here and kicking the sale off to a good start was their 22-month-old Harestone Monarch, a son of the 25,000gns Thrunton Socrates which stood overall champion at Perth. This red ticket holder is bred from Trefonnen Ffion, an Allanfauld Superscot-sired cow which was bought privately.

Harestone Monarch from Neil and Stuart Barclay came under the hammer for 18,000gns          

Keeping it in the family but selling across to France, this cracker sold to Neil’s son in-law, Hugo Retailleau who runs 200 pedigree Charolais cows in the Vendee region, western France. 
Commenting on his purchase, Monsieur Retailleau said: “This is the first Scottish bull I have bought but I have been following the British Charolais pedigree for a long time now, especially Harestone breeding. I had already seen this bull before and I liked the look of him. He’s from a good line too as his sire and dam have both bred well. All of Monarch’s pedigree has been analysed and agreed by the French Charolais Society.”
Securing a 13,000gns bid when sold to P Cooper and Son, Govals, Kincaldrum, Forfar, was the 20-month-old Harestone Master, which stood first in his class. This bull, which is by the 19,000gns Thrunton Fairfax, is an ET bred out of Blelack Gemma, a cow which was bought privately from Blelack and whose first calf sold for a five-figure sum.

Later, the Barclays’ August, 2016-born Harestone MacGregor, which stood second in his class and was part of the best group of three, hit 12,000gns when snapped up by L Forster and Son, West Nubbock, Hexham. This youngster, by the 25,000gns former intermediate champion here, Inverlochy Ferdie – a bull which has won the best sired group of three bulls for a record five times – is the first son of the Harestone Tyrol-sired Harestone Francine.

Also hitting the 16,000gns price tag was the best from the Campbells’ Thrunton hrd based at Alnwick. This was Thrunton Montego, a 19-month-old bull by Maerdy Hearthrob, out of the Balmyle Dickler-sired Thrunton Goldcrest. Selling up to Aberdeenshire, he caught the eye of commercial producer, Ron Smith, Wester Coull, Tarland, Aboyne.

Bob and Kay Adam and sons,  Andrew and James, who run their 25-cow Newhouse herd at Newhouse of Glamis, Forfar, sold their reserve intermediate champion, Newhouse Maxamus, for 15,000gns to JA Connolly’s Brigadoon herd in Ballynahinch, Northern Ireland. One of the first sons of the 28,000gns Maerdy Hearthrob bought by the Adams in 2014, this 19-month-old cracker is the first bull calf sold from the 28,000gns Brampton Nacodar-sired cow, Newhouse Geisha.

On the other side of the coin, the Adams paid 10,000gns for Mark McGahan and son Jack’s October, 2016-born Chunal Maverick from the eight-cow herd at Hadfield, Glossop. Bred from a good line, he is by Harestone Hercules, out of a Brampton Nacodar-sired cow. 
Bulls from Esmor Evan’s 150-cow Maerdy herd based at Mold, Wales, also proved popular when three sons of the 10,000gns Blelack Fabulous – a former reserve senior champion here whose first sons sold to 28,000gns and 22,000gns in 2015 – made 14,000gns, 11,000gns and 10,000gns.
The first, Maerdy Montypython, the intermediate champion, is bred from Maerdy Goddess, an AI daughter of Begonia. Herefordshire breeder, J Price, Oakchurch, Staunton-On-Wye, was the last man in on this 18-month-old bull. 
Minutes later, another Aberdeenshire commercial producer, Bill Keir, Ladymill, Alford, forked out 11,000gns for the similarly aged Maerdy Maosglas. This red ticket holder is out of the Clyth Diplomat-sired Maerdy Grug. 
The last son of Blelack Fabulous to make a five-figure sum was the 16-month-old Maerdy Maldwyn, a bull which stood second in his class. This youngster, which is out of the Maerdy Blackout-sired Maerdy Daphne, sold to Caithness with IH Stewart, Reisgill, Lybster, Wick. 
Two other bulls came under the hammer at 12,000gns to include Strathisla Major from Robert Mcaskie, Hill of Muldearie, Keith. A second prize winner in his class, this July, 2016-born son of the 11,000gns Southwillow Hal, a former senior champion at Carlisle, is out of the Corrie Alan-sired cow, Strathisla Hope. He sold back to his home district with the Simmers family of Backmuir Livestock.

Former society chairman, Andrew Hornall, matched this price tag when he sold his August, 2016-born Falleninch Mars to A Strachan, Clochie, Lethnot, Brechin. The first son of Fairway Jefferson, a sire which was bought alongside his mother for 10,000gns at the Fairway dispersal, this second prize winner is out of the Dereskit Fernando daughter, Falleninch Isabella.

Just behind at 11,500gns and achieving a personal best for Joe Wilson’s Ballinlare herd was Ballinlare Midas, a 20-month-old son of Burradon Goodfellow, which was bought in 2011 for 11,000gns when he was part of the best group of three. Bred out of the best young cow in the herd, Ballinlare Harmony, Midas heads to Midlothian with T Howden and Son, Balleny, Balerno. 
Selling for 11,000gns was Peter and Allen Drysdale’s 17-month-old Glenericht Mecca from his 35-cow herd at Middle Drimmie, Blairgowrie. An AI son of Fleets Vibrant which has been used on heifers to breed replacements, he is out of the heifer, Glenericht Jen, which is a full sister to Glenericht Majestic that sold for 11,500gns last October. He sold to pedigree breeder, Jim Muirhead, Firhills, Letham Grange, Arbroath. 
A further three bulls produced 10,000gns sales to include two from Hamish Goldie’s herd at South Bowerhouses, Ruthwell, Dumfries. The first, Goldies Marshall, a son of Wesley Equinox which stood first in his class, heads out to work near Brechin with the Mathers at Shandford, Fern. 
The other, Goldies Mercedes, which sold to A and J Wilson, Mains of Tillymorgan, Insch, is by Blelack Blackberet, whose sons have sold to 20,000gns. 
Local breeder, Murray Lyle from Mid Cambushinnie, Dunblane, sold Loganbar Magnum to David Wilson, Kirkmabreck, Creetown, Newton Stewart. Backed fully by home-bred genetics, he is by Loganbar Interpol.
