Forfar

LAWRIE and Symington had forward 26 prime cattle at its prime sale last week, where nine bullocks averaged 223p per kg and 17 heifers levelled at 230p.

Heifers produced the top gross per head and per kilo when a 543kg Limousin from West Bog sold for 252p and a 658kg Limousin from Pityot made £1550.24.

The nine bullocks peaked at 250p and £1550 for a Limousin weighing 620kg from Mill of Inverarity.

In the sheep, some 434 prime hoggs levelled at 215.3p (+5.6p) and reached 253.9p for 45.5kg Texels from Cairncortie and £120 for the same from Torrax.

Newton Stewart

TEXELS topped Craig Wilson’s sale of 1031 prime hoggs last week, when a pen of heavyweights from Grant Hurcombe, Meikle Tongue, sold for £120 and a pen from Mount Pleasant realised 250p per kg.

The sale averaged 218.2p.

Cast sheep (270) sold dearer on the week as 87 heavy ewes averaged £58.16 with 168 light ewes at £58.16.

They peaked at £130 for Texel ewes from K Lochhead, St Ninnian, while 15 cast tups sold to £129 from A Wilson, Baryerrock, to average £88.27.

On the same day, the Dumfries and Galloway branch of the Blackface Sheep Association held its show and sale of prime hoggs, where judge, Eilidh MacPherson, Marbrack, awarded the champion rosette to Paul McMillan, Glenchamer, with a pen scaling 44kg which later sold for £100 per life to Dunbia, Llanybydder. Reserve was a pen weighing 39kg from David Ferguson, Drannandow, which sold for £92 apiece to Roy Eardley. In all, the 140 Blackface lambs averaged 230p or £97.50.

Ballymena

AN entry of 2103 sheep met a strong trade at Ballymena Auction Mart, where hoggs reached 527p per kg for a pen of 12 Texels weighing 23.5kg I Montgomery, Glenwherry, as well as £128 for a pen of 11 Texels scaling 25kg from JA O’Loan, Martinstown.  

Prime ewes sold to £125.

Among the 300 beef cattle, fat cows peaked at 207p and £1718 for a 830kg Limousin from Robert Clyde, Templepatrick, while dairy types sold to 134p and £964 for a Friesian weighing 720kg from T and S Clyde, Straid. Heifers reached 210p and £1176 for a 560kg Limousin from Robert Hood, Broughshane, with bullocks to 229p and £1877 for a 820kg British Blue from MJ Lucas, Antrim.

Huntly

ALL hoggs met a firm enquiry at United Auctions’ sale of 2275 old season lambs last week, where heavyweights were in particular demand and regularly passed the £100 per head mark. Trade reached 251p per kg for 40kg Beltex from Newmill of Rathen and £121 for Suffolks weighing 65kg from Hilton of Culsh, New Deer.

Among the 1008 cast ewes, they sold sharper on the week with heavy types selling to extreme rates. Top price was £138 for Suffolks from Clerkseat.

Cockermouth

SOME 89 prime cattle sold through Mitchells Auction Company’s prime sale last week, where a Limousin heifer from G and T Tyson, East House, made 217.50p per kg and a Hereford bull from NP Fish, Crossrigg, sold for £1357.05.

Top pence per kilo in the bull section at 213.50p was a Limousin from RG and JM Smith, Lake View.

Among the 2149 prime hoggs, trade reached 309.5p and £130 for 42kg Beltex from Messrs Knight, Stephney Farm, with SQQs at 218p.

Dumfries

A SMALL show of 20 prime cattle peaked at 230p per kg for a Limousin heifer from Burnside, Lochmaben, at C and D Auction Marts.

Averaging 135.3p, the 27 beef cows sold to £1467 for a Devon from Upper Portrack and 167p for a Hereford from Cormaddie, while 62 dairy cows reached 150p for a Holstein from Balgreggan Mains and £1113.75 for the same from Newhouse to average 119.3p.

Prime sheep (924) continued to make a buoyant trade, with 62 hoggs

Thainstone

LIMOUSINS topped the sale of prime cattle at Aberdeen and Northern Marts when a heifer weighing 525kg from Waterside of Forbes, Alford, made 244p per kg and an 850kg bullock from Biffie, Old Deer, sold for £1572.50.

The eight bullocks which levelled 203.7p also sold to 240p for another Limousin from Waterside of Forbes, while 19 heifers cashed in at 221.3p (+0.5p) and peaked at £1437.75 for a 675kg Limousin from Hillocks, Whiterashes.

Bulls (10) averaged 126.9p (+11.5p) and sold to 168.8p per kg for a British Blue weighing 705kg from Guise, Tough, and £1690 for a 1345kg Simmental from Suttie, Kintore. 

An offering of 128 cast cows levelled at 148p (+1.7p) and peaked at 188p for a 790kg Limousin from Guise, Tough and £1670 for a 1060kg Charolais from Over Finlarg, Tealing.

All classes of prime hoggs (4084) met a keen demand as the sale averaged £100.40 or 227.9p (-0.4p) with the 2466 SQQ hoggs at 232.3p (-0.5p). They sold to 307.5p and £123 for 40kg Beltex from Hallhill, Kinneff.

Darlington

TRADE was sharper on the week at Darlington Farmers’ Auction Mart, where 110 clean cattle peaked at 271p per kg for a Limousin cross heifer from MF Hall, Woodhall and £1544 for a British Blonde heifer from IR Appleton Pudding Poke.

Bullocks (28) sold to £1478 from JM Hall and 239p from IR Appleton.

A better show of bulls resulted in a sharper trade on the week as the 127 forward reached 244p for an entry from WI Suddes and Son and £1804 from AC Simpson and Son.

Among the 1855 prime hoggs, the overall sale averaged 207p with a top price of 274p paid for a pen of three Beltex crosses from JD Brannen, Red Barns. Leading the gross trade at £133 was a single from CS and V Whitfield, The Barn.

Well-fleshed ewes were very much in demand as the 874 forward hit a top of £118 for a pen of five Suffolk crosses from TJ Ball, Newbiggin Farm.

Stirling (UA)

BELTEX dominated United Auctions’ sale of 5401 prime hoggs when a pen from Harviesmailing made £130 and another from Coilavoulin sold for 295p per kg, to average 217.3p.

Cast ewes (1174) reached £154 for Charollais from Langside while rams peaked at £120 for Texels from Tullochan.

Stirling (Cal)

A PLAINER show of cattle sold similar on the week and more could have been sold at Caledonian Marts’ sale of 129 last week.

They sold to 252p per kg for a Limousin heifer from Learielaw, Broxburn and £1646 for a Limousin bullock from T Adam and Son, Craigton, Clackmannan.

Bullocks also reached 245p twice for Limousins from Learielaw, with heifers also hitting £1562 for a Limousin from the same home.

All classes of cast cows and bulls (62) met a great trade with beef cows levelling at 143p and selling to 202p for a Limousin from W Dick, Mains of Throsk and £1590 from D and L Graham, Mains of Burnbank.

Beef cows averaged 143p and sold to 202ppkg for a Limousin from W Dick, Mains of Throsk and to £1590 from D and L Graham, Mains of Burnbank.  

OTM males and bulls cashed in to average 137p and reached 178p from T and E Tod, Nether Longford and £1060 from R and W Waugh, Summerhouse.  

On Tuesday, the firm sold 1572 prime hoggs, ewes and tups where 1058 hoggs averaged 224.6p, a rise of 6.7p on the week and 60.4p on the year.

Top price was £122 for Beltex from Doune Farms, West Lundie and J Graham, Raecruick, while a pen of four Beltex crosses from A and M Barr, Easter Buchlyvie, achieved the lead pence per kg at 267p.

Heavy ewes (81) averaged £83 selling to £125 for a Texel from R Wardrope and Son, Easter Coates, with the 415 export types cashing in at £54.58.

Cast tups (20) peaked at £116 for a Texel from A MacGregor, Allanfauld.

Longtown

A GOOD selection of prime cattle weighing between 650kg and 700kg met a strong trade at C and D Auction Marts’ sale of 22 last week, where a top price of 242p per kg was achieved for a British Blue heifer from J, J and D Taylor, Englishtown.

Heifers also topped the gross per head when a Limousin heifer from Messrs Fiddler, Barrow Ling, made £1603.

Among the bullocks, trade reached 230p for a Limousin bullock from A and WJ Taylor and Son, Dashwell Green.

Charolais from Moss Side topped the cast cows at £915.

St Boswells

ALL averages were back on the week at Harrison and Hetherington’s recent prime sale when 19 bullocks averaged 214p per kg (-6p) and 48 heifers cashed in at 216p (-1p).

Heifers sold to 250p from Wester Ulston, while bullocks peaked at 230p from JF Finlay and Co, Gospelhall. Top price per head at £1631.52 was paid for a beast from Kedzlie.

Cast cows were back by 14p on the week when the 77 forward averaged 147.7p and sold to 197p from Muircleuch and £1992.70 from Kedzlie.

An offering of 1067 prime hoggs averaged 212.3p (-14p or £95.86) and peaked at £128 for Suffolks from Bonjedward Mill and 262p for Beltex from Halidean Mill.

Averaging £72.71, the 356 ewes sold to £126 for Texel cross ewes from Currie Inn as heavy ewes averaged £84. Light ewes averaged £71 and reached £103 for Cheviots from Adderstonshiels.

Ayr

ON Monday, Craig Wilson sold 2455 prime sheep this week, comprising of 2099 hoggs and 356 cast ewes and tups.

Quality hoggs were easily sold and peaked at 258.1p per kg and £180 for a pen of 43kg Beltex from M Stevenson, Balcaimie, Dailly to average 220.7p (-3.1p on the week and +57.5p on the year).

Blackface hoggs hit 220p for a pen weighing 40kg from W Ramsay and Son, Milnmark, with 935 forward averaging 213.5p.

Heavy ewes sold to £156.50 for a pen of Texel ewes from JA Gibson and Co, Cowgrove, Galston, with the overall average levelling at £86.14. Leading the light ewes at £94.50 was a pen of Blackface ewes from J Caldwell and Son, Moorfield, Kilmarnock. They averaged £62.52.

Lanark

BUTCHERS cattle cashed in at 236.5p per kg at Lawrie and Symington’s prime sale at Lanark on Monday, where a 526kg Limousin heifer from David Dickinson, Brockwoodlees, sold for the lead price of 246p per kg.

The 76 cast cows and bulls peaked at £1700 for a Charolais cow from St Johns Kirk and 157p for a Limousin cow from Stonebyres.

Calves and stirks (33) reached £550 for a stirk from Lambhill.

In the sheep, 2988 prime hoggs averaged 217.6p and peaked at 291p for a 43kg Texel from R and M Struthers, Collielaw, and £138.50 for a 70kg Texel from H Griffies, Drumalbin Cottgae.

Texels from Nisbet topped the cast ewes at £170.

Carlisle

A REDUCED show of 41 prime steers and heifers was forward at Harrison and Hetherington’s sale on Monday, which was topped at £1687.43 for a Limousin bullock from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton.

Top price per kg was 239.5p for British Blonde cross Limousin heifers from Glebe Farm.

Heifers peaked at £1445.24 for a Limousin from Messrs Brough, How Gill, Wigton, with bullocks to 236.5p for a Blonde from Northrigg Hill.

All classes of prime hoggs met a decent trade, with heavy hoggs witnessing a rise on the week having sold to £128.80 for Millennium Bleus from Messrs Cowen, Itonfield, Ivegill and 320p for Beltex from High Field.

Leading price among the cast ewes was £125.50 from Whiteside.

Dingwall

NINE prime cattle sold through Dingwall and Highland Marts on Tuesday, where trade reached 225p per kg for a 535kg Limousin cross heifer from Easter Strath of Auchterflow, Avoch and £1367.10 for a similar heifer weighing 630kg from Ashley.

The entry of 1198 old season lambs averaged 215.1p (-11.1p) and peaked at 239.1p and £110 for a pen of 46kg Beltex crosses from Torgorm, Conon Bridge.

Feeding sheep (140) sold to £123 gross for a Texel cross ewe from Inveruglas, Kingussie.

Hopes

PRIME hoggs sold to £149 per head for a pen of 41kg Beltex from S and D Peile, Parkgate Hall, Wigton, at Hopes Auction Company’s sale of 1217.

Top price per kg was 388.6p per kg for Beltex from JM Wharton and Son, Snade, Dunscore.

The overall sale averaged 245.58p, with Beltex types levelling at £120 or 298.6p.

A larger show of prime ewes saw a rise in trade as Texels from J Dixon and Sons, Lesson Hall, Wigton, topped at £140, while cast tups reached £128 for Texels from Kiln Close.
