Orkney judge, Terry Coghill, backed his decision and bought his choice of champion and reserve at the Northern Ireland Charolais Club show and sale at Dungannon.

The sale which had been postponed due to the bad weather at the beginning of the month, saw an 86% clearance, (+9% on the year), with Mr Coghill taking two home back to Birsay for clients on the island.

His first purchase at 4800gns – on behalf of Messrs Patterson, Feltigar, Orkney – was the reserve senior and reserve overall champion from grandfather and grandson duo, Harold and Alan Stubbs. Their 19-month-old Derryharney Mustang, is by the 10,000gns Perth supreme champion Thrunton Bonjovi, and bred from the Goldies Carnival daughter Derryharney Hazel.

Mr Coghill also went to 4200gns to secure the supreme champion Carrgene Muckian, for Messrs Featter, Westray, Orkney. This August 2016-born son of the Irish-bred Crossmolina Euro, from Eugene Muckian, Silverbridge, Co Down, is out of Carrgene Gemma, a Major daughter.

Leading the pack at 5600gns and 5000gns respectively were entries from Jonathan Crawford, Maghera, Co Derry. The first, Coolnaslee Manager, which stood third in his class at the pre-sale show, caught the eye of O Jeffers, Cookstown, Co Tyrone. August 2016-born, Manager is sired by the 10,000gns Ratoary Ferguson, while his dam, Edenhurst Hrh, purchased at the herd dispersal for 8000gns, is by Dingle Hofmeister.

Mr Crawford’s 5000gns bull was the reserve junior Coolnaslee Minto, a 15-month-old son of Ratoary Icebreaker, bred from the 10,000gns Blelack Babe, that goes back to Thrunton Socrates. Minto went home with C Shaw, Carryduff, Belfast.

Co Fermanagh breeders, Harold Stubbs and Alan Burleigh, had a good day selling four bulls to average £4252.50. Having sold the reserve champion at 4800gns, they sold another at the same price to John McHenry, Strancum, Co Antrim. This was the September 2016-born Derryharney Muncher, by Blelack Digger out of Derryharney Jazzystar.

Females were led by the section champion at 3100gns. The 21-month-old Brogher Mygirl from T Phair, Bellanaleck, Co Fermanagh was purchased by Andrew Dunne, Kinawley, Co Fermanagh. Mygirl is another by Blelack Digger and out of Brogher Fancygirl.

Averages: 38 bulls, £3285 (+£367 for five more sold).
