A SCOTTISH producer bought many of the top priced lots at the dispersal of Malcolm and Jean Hutchinson's Kirkby Stephen-based Bowberhill herd of pedigree Holsteins at Carlisle, last week, including the top priced lot at 7200gns.

The highly anticipated sale, which welcomed buyers from no fewer than 21 counties from all over the UK and Ireland, reached 7200gns for a daughter of Coyne-Farms Darcy – a bull whose influence could be seen throughout the herd, including in his son, Mountfield SSI DCY Mogul. That was Bowberhill Dorcy Vanessa VG87, a rising four-year-old second calver that is bred from seven generations of cows in the top two classifications. With a close to perfect udder, she is bred from a popular Italian cow family tracing back to Aquila Cleitus Vanessa, and sold to R McNeil, Cairnpat, Stranraer, having calved in December.

Of the 39 animals selling for £3000 or above, Mr McNeil bought six and his next dearest at 6500gns was Bowberhill Mogul Gremlin VG88-3yr. This time bred from four generations of Excellent-rated cows and going back to the show cow, Upsall Skychief Gremlin Ex93-2E, she calved her second in July.

Not far behind with a 6200gns price tag, Mr McNeil secured the slightly younger Bowberhill Lineman Gail VG86-2yr which calved her first last August. Another from a long line of VG and Ex-classified dams, her pedigree features the Astronaut Gail cow developed by the Startmore herd in Ontario, Canada.

Also heading to Cairnpat, this time for 5000gns, was another Dorcy daughter in the shape of Bowberhill Dorcy Lana VG86, a second calver whose immediate two dams classified Ex92-2E.

The youngest milking female in the catalogue sold for the second highest price when Eryl Done forked out 7000gns to take Bowberhill McCutchen Barb 2 home to Northfield Farm Cottage, Lowick, Berwick upon Tweed. Classified VG86 just a couple weeks after calving her first in January, she comes from a long line of high Ex-rated cows, including a 90-tonne Ex94 Emerson daughter. Joining her on the trip to Northfield was another second calver, Bowberhill Logrey Mogul Mandy VG87, which was purchased for 4600gns.

Heading across the water to Ballymaguire Road, Stewartstown, Dungannon, with Jason Booth for 5100gns was the VG85-yr Bowberhill Mogul Papoose, which is bred from a whopping 17 generations of cow in the top two classifications and traces back to the noted Sleepy-Hollow Mi Papoose and Sleepy-Hollow Marq I cows. She sold having calved her first in December.

A good offering of in-calf heifers peaked at 42000gns twice, with the first of these heading to Dawnmore House, Co Cork, Eire, with B O'Connor. That was Bowberhill Mogul Melody which again traces back to the noted Astronaut Gail cow as well as a 130-tonne grand-dam.

Matching that 4200gns when sold to AL Dean and Son, Tofthouse, Threshfield, Skipton, was a daughter of the 4600gns Logrey Mogul Mandy in the shape of Bowberhill Logrey Doorsopen Mandy.

Leading the heifer calf entry at 2700gns was Bowberhill Applicable Gremlin 2, which is bred from five direct Ex dams and sold to Geoffery Patton, of the Carrowcroft herd in Co Down, Northern Ireland.

Averages: 99 cows and heifers in milk, £3597.00; 17 in-calf heifers, £2665.14; 15 recently served heifers, £2233.00; 13 bulling heifers, £1445.76; 56 heifer calves, £1444.68; nine embryos, £437.50.
