A NEW centre record of £8000 was achieved at the annual spring show and sale of continental cross steers and heifers at Borderway Mart, Carlisle.
The sale, which attracted a large number of enthusiasts looking to source the next big commercial show champion for the summer and winter events, was led by the pre-sale champion, a black Limousin cross heifer from John and Mandy Smith-Jackson of Hightown, Haltwhistle.
Their 11-month-old heifer is by the home-bred Limousin bull, Hightown Jacko and bred from a former herd show winner. Mike Scott of Besthorpe was the final bidder at £8000, buying over the phone.
The Smith-Jacksons were again in the money selling their reserve steer champion, a Limousin cross steer to AG Laws, Leyburn, for £2200.
The reserve champion, selected by the judge, Mark Harryman, Pickering, sold for the next top price of £4500, to Mike Kirby, Holsworthy. This was the winning baby beef heifer, another black Limousin cross entry, this time from Kilnstown Farm. She is sired by the Welsh bull, Glangwden Downtown.

Outwith the show cattle, trade peaked at £1780 and £1750 paid for Limousin cross heifers from Gillian Scott, Gateside, Linlithgow.
