A LIMOUSIN cross heifer from Gary Stanger, South Seatter, Sandwick, ruled supreme at a recent show and sale of Young Farmers’ overwintered cattle at Orkney Auction Mart, when it stood overall champion and sold for the top price of £2700.
Champion for Gary was a 12-month-old heifer which he bought for £1090 last October from breeders, Cameron and Valerie Fraser, Housebay Farms, Stronsay. Weighing in at 700kg, she is by Ballyrobin Drambuie and out of a home-bred South Devon cross cow.
Producing the highest daily liveweight gain of 1.27kg per day, she also achieved the best overall weight gain of 230kg and the highest gross margin of £1610 when sold to Aberdeenshire with the judge, Harry Emslie, of Kinknockie, Mintlaw, Peterhead.
Mr Emslie then forked out £1700 for the reserve champion from Inga Kemp, Hatston Park, St Ola. This was a May, 2016-born Limousin cross heifer bred by Terry and Sheena Coghill, and son Lee, from Muce, Birsay.
Purchased last September for £970 from the Coghills, she is by Ronick Granville and out of a home-bred Limousin cross cow. Inga, who stood best young handler, saw her 670kg heifer produce a daily liveweight gain of 1.26kg per day, having scaled in at 415kg when purchased.
